Vintage 30s, Greenbacks, or G12T-75s????

Re: Vintage 30s, Greenbacks, or G12T-75s????

I have a 2x12 w/a v30 and g12t-75 wired in series. Hand wired class 5 clone. The 2x12cab is offset so I put the v30 in the higher spot and the g12t-75 lower spot. It bumps some tone.

Yeah, the scooped mid speakers are what my buddy's trying to get me to buy, and it's sort of a mutual thing... I think that perhaps any speaker would be an improvement over the Crate's stock speakers, but I'm interested in these off brand speakers, like Hellatone, now. Do they stand up against Celestions?

Hellatones are Celestions, just broken in and rebranded by Avatar.

Re: Vintage 30s, Greenbacks, or G12T-75s????

Well guys I got the T75s. They're okay. Not bad. I can drive the amp a tad harder. Definitely sound way better when this thing is cranked to 5 or 6. Loud. I ended up turning my presence to like 4, which is NOT like me at all. My treble went to 8, my mids around 6, and my bass pretty fat, around 6-7. Overall, the tone is alright. Gainy on Level one overdrive with the gain around 7, so it's got that bite. And when I step on my overdrive the feedback is clear sounding... I'm gonna keep playing around with it. Thanks for the advice guys!

Re: Vintage 30s, Greenbacks, or G12T-75s????

Greenbacks all the way! T75's are ok and it is good to have a setting for those speakers because if you play a gig that is backlined you will most likely be playing through that speaker but... Greenbacks will give you THE sound you are looking for the style you are playing.

Re: Vintage 30s, Greenbacks, or G12T-75s????

Even though Slash made me pick up the guitar in their AFD-days, my vote goes to the Greenbacks.

In my minds eye : Greenbacks = pure primal hard rock tone !

Re: Vintage 30s, Greenbacks, or G12T-75s????

Check the speakers in your Crate Vintage Club cab carefully. The Vintage Club series varied some, but one variety of speaker cabs from that series came with Vintage 30s. Others typically came with Eminence Legend 125s re-branded as Crate speakers. Both the Vintage 30s and the 125s are decent speakers, but I rarely like using them in stand alone applications. A G12T-75 next to either might give you some nice complimentary tones.

Re: Vintage 30s, Greenbacks, or G12T-75s????

the g12's have a scooped mid sound, I think they sound good clean. better then most other speakers to be honest. the greenbacks are all around good tone. its a mild pronounced midrange tone. V30's are pronounced midrange. broken in they sound better. I like em in 2/12 speaker cabs closed back and that gives them a good clean and dirty sound. bedroom amp speaker-some claim they sound alittle harsh or gritty. probably becouse your directly faceing the speaker cone in the bedroom. I think they cut very nice and they accentuate the gain nicely as well. they clip nice when pushed but sound good clean in a closed back cab. there my favorite speaker cuz guitar is basically rythem and lead so its all about midrange in a band to cut through usually. the g12's are ok for now. you will miss that midrange cut but this can be made up for by dileing in the midrange on your amp. if playing by yourself practiceing in your home, g12's have a nice fat tone thats fat and round. in a band they are fat but not as pronounced in the mids and you will have to EQ the midrange so you can dile some back in again. they do accent gain becouse the speaker has a scooped high tone so it does pick up gain on every note on a distortion setting. cleans are smooth and punchy.

Re: Vintage 30s, Greenbacks, or G12T-75s????

I am not a fan of the GT1275s with the heads I've matched them up to so I would personally avoid them. But that doesn't make them a bad speaker by any means and I think with moderate gain they are probably OK.

Can you try your amp out to your friend's cabinet to get an idea of how they would sound before you commit?

I play both V30s and Greenbacks and think both are much richer sounding speakers. Greenbacks do a little more thump while the V30 has a little more clarity but still round.

But your experience may differ

Re: Vintage 30s, Greenbacks, or G12T-75s????

Open your MIDS a knotch or two if you are, stressed! Other cool thing is to have a lower current speaker, you can secretly control your amp a little, and not in people's faces.

Re: Vintage 30s, Greenbacks, or G12T-75s????

I've used everything under the sun over the years, but nothing sounded as good as my cab with greenbacks. I was a V30 guy for a long time, but the greenbacks just make me feel warm and fuzzy when my amp gets all warm and fuzzy.

Re: Vintage 30s, Greenbacks, or G12T-75s????

I used to dislike T75's, mostly from my JCM900 days, but I think it was probably the amp because the more I play on them the more I like them now. They do require you to re-eq, I guess that's too much to ask of a lot of dudes who would rather complain about them on the internet than turn a few knobs.

Re: Vintage 30s, Greenbacks, or G12T-75s????

lol....
t75s are fine. IN fact they are one of the industry's standard speakers. They work especially well with modern (ie, 800 and later) high gain marshalls. They are good for thickening the bottom end of what are usually not bottom heavy amps.
Buy 'em.
Try em. sell em if you dont like 'em.
They will definitely slay what you are using now.
Its a 100 dollar gamble, that you can recoup if you decide to sell them on....

Selecting speakers from what cork sniffers tell you on the net will drive you mad.

You run your mids on 3 anyway and your treble and presence high with the crap speakers you have got. Turn up your mids a knotch or two if you are that stressed out! The other cool thing about having a less present speaker is that you can secretly turn your amp master up a bit and not get in people's faces (....shhhh, its our secret!).

This stuff is not rocket science - and dont forget that those things (t75s) sound better the more you push them. They worked fine for a whole generation of guitar gods.

+1

Hellatones are Celestions that Avatar breaks in for you

Re: Vintage 30s, Greenbacks, or G12T-75s????

T75s suck, IMHO. Cheap crap. I'd rather have fewer "real" speakers.

I am not generally a friend of all that rectro'n'v30s craze. I think to make them sound good the v30s need an oversized cab.

The expensive Celestions sound much better for general purpose, unfortunately.

Re: Vintage 30s, Greenbacks, or G12T-75s????

I own two Crate Vintage Club 50 heads, so I'm pretty familiar with where you are coming from tone wise. These are great sounding heads that deliver amazing cleans. Many of the Vintage Club series amps came stock with Crate speakers that were essentially Eminence Legend 125s.

I also own a few G12T-75s, Vintage 30s and Greenbacks. To my ears, the VC50 line takes best to the Greenbacks. It preserves the amp's cleans very well. I like both the G12T-75 and the Vintage 30. The VC 50 takes very well to the Vintage 30 and the G12T-75. You just have to make some EQ adjustments, but the Greenback beats them both in this application.

This stuff is not rocket science - .

ugh, yeah..it kind of is..;

Reinholdt uses a cbinet loaded with G12-T'75's for his scorchers.
I think guys (LUcid?) use 12-75's with 12-30's fr a great dynamic and full sound.
I really like how the G-12-75 Cedlestions have a very touch sensitive and dynamic responsive sound. I used to hate em, but yeah, they are good speakers.
