VINTAGE MIC SCORE!!!

Well, since there is no place for stuff like this it'll end up in the amp room!!!

Got a new project working and I'm going to end up handling a fair bit of vocal work so I decided I needed a good vocal mic but I didn't want a standard run of the mill SM58 or some other dull mic so when I found this as a smokin' price I had to jump...it was sold untested but I was super surprised to get it out of the box today and find that not only does it look cool it does in fact work!!!

Mine's not this clean but you get the idea...

Re: VINTAGE MIC SCORE!!!

WTH is that ?? Seriously, thought I would see a Neumann or Sennhiesher. Also, the mics go in tips and clips.

Re: VINTAGE MIC SCORE!!!

Yeah,+1 what make/model? How does it sound?

Are you planning to use it live or for recording or both?

Re: VINTAGE MIC SCORE!!!

Bahh..I was expecting some vintage Made In China ampage in this thread

Re: VINTAGE MIC SCORE!!!

That mic is YOU, dude. I remember having them around back in the day, in schools and churches and such. A bit before my time in the rock band biz, though.

Make sure you have a couple spare cables for it before gigging.

Re: VINTAGE MIC SCORE!!!

i have one of those too. very cool. gotta say though, doesnt sound as good as many of my other mics. my pr35 is my go to vocal mic

Re: VINTAGE MIC SCORE!!!

Those EVs are slightly different beasts. The Variable-D design gives them a cardiod pattern without the low-end proximity boost you get when you work a normal cardiod (i.e. SM58). The later-model 664A was basically a 660 with a fixed stand mount. I used to keep a 660 (or its gray cousin, the PL5) in my mic box as a guitar cab mic for when I wanted flatter response and less low end than what a Shure would give me.

Once you learn how to work it, and with a bit of EQing, the 664 should be fine. It looks da bomb, and that's what's really important. LOL

It is the 664 like Crusty linked.

It'll be live only...I have sort of gotten shoved into a place where I'll be doing a lot of vocals so I decided to get my hands on a few mics and wanted something "cooler" than what I see in clubs most often.

Thanks man!

I got hands on one cable right now...nobody makes cables for them anymore but I found a guy that does them custom...one will do me for now but I will be getting a few more, might even get a few more of the mics too!

I'm sure it's not nearly as "good" a mic as many new mics but I have to be honest...the sound in most bars is the pits for starters, on top of that I'm no killer vocalist anyway plus it looks so cool it's hard to pass up!

Cool stuff...I'll see what happens once I get it cranking!

^ I notice you are completely ignoring me now. Too bad, I wanted you to comment in my Dumble thread.

I'm sorry but I don't know a lot about microphone cables - it just seems like an older mic wouldn't need really hi-fi cables? I'm only familiar with standard copper audio cables so please correct me if I'm wrong. My gut however says that a DIY cable for such a mic wouldn't be so tall an order as to be impossible, but again, I've been wrong before. I'm kind of curious what the custom cables look like. And the plugin for the mic.

Who said hi-fi??

My cable is a "standard copper audio cable"...

Many of these old EV mics used a 4 pin screw on connector that hasn't really been used in decades.

The guy that makes the cables has a HUGE stash of old ends as well as many that he has custom made.

He made me a cable that is the EV 4 pin in the mic end and a standard XLR on the other.

I didn't think you were serious...

Why would I buy a Neumann or Sennheiser (which you spelled wrong BTW) to gig in a bar??

I'll be glad to comment in your Dumble thread but you won't like it...FWIW, I thought that thread was a joke too...

Yeah I have sometimes wondered if it would be worth bringing my own mic to the club for vox, because my voice can get a little muddy and bassy and I like mics that bring out upper mids more.

Good luck gigging with it and let us know how it goes -

Re: VINTAGE MIC SCORE!!!

Where do you get cables for those? I've had one sitting in my house for years with a busted cable, never got around to finding one and trying it out. Awesome looking mics, did you get the one of the sweet chrome stands to go with it?

Thats too funny that you mentioned the stand!!!

All my mic stands are black but I am going to get a chrome stand for this...I just have to!
