Vintage style humbuckers.

I am looking to put better pickups in my Epi Les Paul. ALL companies being considered. What are going to be the best sounding? authentic tone is important but awesome sound is the biggest goal. I will also be upgrading hardware and electronics as well( reason for my tone cap question in guitar shop).
Also: Are production floor Duncans machine wound or hand wound like the Antiquities and custom shop models? Thanks always.

Re: Vintage style humbuckers.

almost all humbuckers ever made are machine wound regardless of brand or vintage

gibson paf's, pat #, t-tops, shaw, burstbuckers, 57 classics, 49x series, dirty fingers etc... every gibson humbucker is machine wound.

even duncan antiquity humbuckers are machine wound. they are wound on the exact machine from kalamazoo that made gibson paf's in the 50's and 60's but its still just a machine. i believe that all the duncan paf type humbuckers are done on the same machine.

ive always loved a set of 59's in an epi les paul. 500k pots and .02 caps is what i would use

Re: Vintage style humbuckers.

Which exact Epiphone LP model do you have? (There are so many variants. Not all use the traditional materials and construction methods.)

My suggestion is a pair of SD Live Wire Classic II humbuckers.

I have one of the new standards. It says all mahogany which the body is a few pieces but the guitar is extremely resonate. It has modern tunners which I am not sure makes that big a tonal difference. I ordered a set of the grovers which come on the Les Paul supreme and custom as well if I'm not mistaken. As good as it sounds I know the upgrades will make a difference. As is it sounds better than some gibsons I have played. Here is what I am considering pick up wise. Seymour s 59s of course. bare knuckles rif raffs (I think thats the model I thought sounded closest to what I am looking for), gibson 57 classics, peter florences voodoo 50s set. Maybe even Seymous antiquity set. I really don't want actives which I beleive the live wire are but thank you anyway.:cool2:

Thanks man. BTW I thought you didn't have any Gibson type guitars. I thought you said one your heros played Les Pauls but you never found one you bonded with. I guess that has changed?:1:

Re: Vintage style humbuckers.

ive had a few epiphone les pauls over the years, one bright orange classic that was damn fine and i miss every once in a while. i ended up trying lots of pups in them and always ended up being happiest with 59's, 500k cts pots and .02 caps.

seths, antiquitys, customs with various magnets, jazz, pearlys etc... always ended up with 59's.

i sold all them off, not cause i couldnt get great sounds with them but cause, like you mentioned, i never bonded with them. ive had custom shop gibsons, production gibsons, an old '79 maple neck lp. all gone too. i have a gibson lp special with buckers that i havent got rid of yet, and i like it for the most part, but i think ill eventually get rid of it. i also have a usa washburn wms thats sorta sg like but again i think ill eventually get rid of it. just cause i dont love em, doesnt mean i havent had a bunch and experimented with em while i did.

i think have found my answer in a hamer monaco elite in tobacco burst. now i just have to find one for cheap lol :D
