Volune of fender bassman

Re: Volune of fender bassman

I love the bassman through a 4x10. But it's loud. Not just too loud for the apartment. It's too loud for most of the gigs I have ever played.

Re: Volune of fender bassman

I hate it for you guys who can't crank a 40w amp at gigs. If sound guys start complaining i just tell them not to mic me.

It's also about volume and dynamics with the other players in your band. If your guitar amp is drowning out everyone and everything else that's not fun for anyone else on stage. It's much easier for the one loud guy to turn down than it is to turn everything else up.

Outdoor shows are easier for me in that regard. But playing a small bar where we aren't miced anyways is a different story.

Well, I value my ears and the other musicians in the band too much. Also, I use in-ears when I play. On a fesival date I might bring an amp (an 18 watt Mesa Blue Angel), but even then I put it way off to the side and it doesn't face me.

Maybe in a band with lots of different instruments or something but in a rock setup? Guitars turn up to match the drummer's volume, vocals through the PA, everything sounds fine. Sound guy can keep his SM57s in the drawer.

Re: Volune of fender bassman

my bassman would drown out a drummer. i used it at a good sized outdoor show with my esquire, channels jumped both volumes at 9 (of 12) and it sounded glorious but i was obnoxiously loud. i replaced the p10r speakers with p10q which made the tone better to my ears but it also made it louder. i can usually get away with my 5e3 at gigs as long as i keep the volume in check but those amps get juicy really early on the volume, by 4 its singing

Yeah. And like Jeremy said a 59 Bassman can overpower a drummer if turned up to overdriven levels.

Maybe if your drummer is just getting started or is 90lbs or uses brushes, sure. I guess I'll agree to disagree but if it wasn't too loud in the 50s and 60s it's not too loud now...

My drummer is a friggin body builder and has arms the size of tree trunks. But thanks for that.

Re: Volune of fender bassman

in the 50's they werent turning the amps up to distort. in the late 60's some drummers used huge drum sets to keep up with the volume. my bassman cranked up was a loud ass amp, not much less sheer volume than a 100w head.

Re: Volune of fender bassman

Back in the 90s I was in a band that sometimes shared venues with another blues-rock band. And even when we were not playing I would often try to catch their show somewhere. The guitarist in that band played with two, yes two, 4-10 bassmans. I don't know if he always cranked them, and he usually had a tube screamer between the guitar and the amps, but he was always loud. I didn't think he was too loud but being a fellow guitarist I might be jaded? Things have changed a lot since then. I don't think he could get away with that now. But there's a lot of variation to what is loud, loud enough, and way too loud.

A few years later I was at jam and I brought a 50 watt 1x12 tube combo. My amp was absolutely crushed. Totally cranked, I could not hear myself hardly at all, and my buddy out in the audience said he could not hear me there either. I had installed a low sensitivity speaker in the amp, though. If I had a 100db speaker in the amp, it might have been loud enough, or maybe too loud, for that situation? So you never know, but most times a 30 watt amp is plenty loud.

Re: Volune of fender bassman

Perceived sound levels vary greatly depending upon where one is positioned in relation to the speakers. Standing in front of a 2x12 combo on the floor is nothing compared to having same combo aimed directly at your head. Thus the development of p.a.'s and monitors. It's incredibly difficult to get a good stage mix that also sounds good to the audience without them.

I'm gonna have to agree with all of this. I don't know what kinda places everyone else is playing, but I've had the same experience as EP. Sure it's loud, but it's not that loud, c'mon.

Thanks for getting my back :smokin:

My 80w Orange Overdrive is my favorite gigging amp... the 50w Bassman wasn't cutting it but the Orange is good for house shows and big stages and everything in between.

Its worth mentioning that different genres and playing styles require different tools so we might be making some unfair comparisons.

Re: Volune of fender bassman

You know there are players who put combo amps on their backs on chairs.....speakers facing the ceiling who play fairly loud or put plexiglass shields in front of miked cabs.

Re: Volune of fender bassman

I had mine up to about 3 tonight. Honestly it's loud. But sweet cleans, Lordy lord.

Re: Volune of fender bassman

jump the channels and roll both volumes up to 9. now thats loud, but so much fun. i like the cleans of the tweed amps but usually prefer the bf clean tones with reverb. adding reverb to brawny tweed tones can be tricky
