So one of the power tubes (EL84) needs replacement, and currently all 4 tubes (2x 12ax7s and 2x EL84s) are stock Sovteks.

Question: If I change that one faulty power tube with a JJ EL84, while the rest are all Sovteks, am I gonna :

a. have no problems and everything should run smooth

b. End up getting a mismatched tone

c. cause some sort of damage to the amp

Re: Vox Night Train tube change follow up question

I'm not an expert so someone correct me if I'm wrong. This I know because I had one, it's a cathode biased amp so you don't have to bias it after the tube change (although it's always good to have a tech check it if possible) but you should really put in a new matched pair of power tubes if one of them goes...

I've always been told that rrule of thumb was if one goes the other, or others, depending on your amp won't be far behind so it's best to change both. Otherwise you do run some risk of damaging the head.

As far as the 12AX7's go, they are fine to switch out one at a time & to mix match...

I have mixed power tubes. I have no idea if it did damage, but the amp stilled worked and it was for a short period of time. I would buy thr pair personally.

Re: Vox Night Train tube change follow up question

With current production tubes it is always better to use matched sets of tubes in your power section.
