want to give my review on the EV12M

Hey all
Just wanted to share my thoughts about this speaker (EVM12L), I currently have 2 100watt amps, one is a seymour duncan convertible 82' (best amp ever made) and the 2nd is a fender clone made by a local here which is great.

The SD amp came with the celestion G12-85 which i used for more than a year now, it's a great speaker, I loved it, warm, excellent detail and it gets muddy in a good way of making your guitar feel like a million dollars.

My dad a few months ago ordered two EV12ms for a 2x12 cab he wantd to build, ended up building only one bass-like cab (from EV's specs on their site) with a closed back, and this speaker was lying around for those few months. last week, i ordered a vintage 30 (which is not available in Israel, got it from a forum member :) and still waiting for it to get here and i told my dad and he reminded me about the EVM lying here that i never tried.

I said what the hell and tried it, first i tried it in clean, it's great, more detail (when playing min7/maj7 chords i heard the 7 CLEARLY) than the celestion i think and chords do not get muddy when strummed hard (on the celestion the speaker felt like it was gonna jump out the cab), it has this quality of staying tamed even when going nuts with chords whilst the celestion went into a bit of overdrive even in clean. +1 for the EVM

next came the distortion which is my favorite :0 since i am after all a metal player in origin (and will always be, in origin :)

Now this is when i had mixed feelings, it has a certain quality of grittiness (like the 7khz turned all the way up on the EQ) which makes you grit your teeth, which i didn't like and was kinda disappointing since i only heard good things on the EVM, but i guess that's the speakers quality. ok, so i pull out my trusty MXR 10 band EQ to tame this annoying grittiness and WOW, now this speaker is ROARRRRRING littearly. i can see why Mr Wylde uses it, it kills and leaves no prisoners and even in high volume high distortion the speaker i believe, is still asleep, the celestion was sounding overdrived while this had pure god-like distortion. I was playing a little wing improvised solo over a playback and i did a bend on the 14th fret B string and all that's came into my mind was not the next passage but "MOTHER !!! THE TONE @@!#@!# THE TONE !@#@#!@#"
that has never happened to me before, usually I am in awe after hearing people like Eric Johnson, Petrucci and Andy timmons get their amazing sound, I am now one step closer with this EVM.

Now when i get the vintage 30, I don't know if it's gonna lie around till i build a cab or if I would connect it on sight since I am a big petrucci fan, but it's only a 60w rating on the 30 (shame).

P.S The bass-like cab my dad built i also tried and had to again use the EQ because there was too much bass and everythign else got lost in the mix, I guess using one closed back and one open back is a good combo for good balance of big bass and good guitar sound.

My setup is: warmoth Axis-like guitar with EMG 89/60 combo - MXR 10 band - Cable all the way to the amp - SD convertible 82 (which has Normal,higain-EQ,classic,Higain,Presence Modules).

simple setup, but you can't go wrong with that :)

just wanted to share my thoughts with you guys

Re: want to give my review on the EV12M

nice write-up!

I have a 2x12 i made with a Celestion Classic lead 80 and an EVM12L and that EV really does just get big wide clear articulate tones. My Mesa head really likes that cab more than my recto 2x12 V30 loaded cab.

I feel like the amp just pummels the vintage 30's so much they start to choke the complexity of the tone... the EV lets it sing.

Hey Ang3lus, I also have a duncan convertible and i'm also from Israel. I wouldn't call it the best amp ever made and only when I add an eq pedal in the loop it sounds good. I'm now using it with a 2x12 vintage 30 loaded avatar cab and it sounds much better with it but there's still something missing for me... I wonder if the EVM would sound better. I'm from Givatayim BTW where are you from?

No I didn't put a pic of my rack on Solidrock I guess that was someone else... Check your PM.

Re: want to give my review on the EV12M

I love the EVM12L. My Recto vertical 2x12 came with two V30's, and it sounded cheap, crispy, and fragile. I installed an EVM12L in top...and was going to install one in the botom, but I was getting outbid on EBay.

I said, screw it! Instead of using another EVM, I ordered an Eminence "Swamp Thang". It sounds great to my ears!

edit: You may like the V30, this was just my experience.

or u could save a ton of money and get the poor mans EV-the Peavey Black Widow( or scorpion but they arent 1/2 as nice),

Re: want to give my review on the EV12M

i was thinking of building a 2x12 cab but not the ones that lie down, the ones that are vertical, and then try different combos.

Re: want to give my review on the EV12M

is the EVM broken in yet? ... i wonder if that upper end problem will go away over time if it breaks in a bit more

glad you are happy .....

Re: want to give my review on the EV12M

it's broken in yes, but it seems it's like that only with this type of distortion from the amp, it sounds much different on my fender clone, aka only awesome.
