wanting to possibly replace the JB in LP

Re: wanting to possibly replace the JB in LP

From my experience, the amp has some input on that. I don't have much experience with the JB, but when I had it in a 73 LP Deluxe (yep, routed), it had that hot compressed tone through my master volume amps, but a really sweet "hit the front end hard" sound through my non-master amps like a Univox U45B, Univox U1246 and a couple of 73 Marshalls.

I don't think the OP wants to buy a new amp.

Re: wanting to possibly replace the JB in LP

I know that BM. Just responding to the poster who said it will be compressed no matter what. For the OP, I'm thinking different pickup as well. For what he's looking for, I think the 59, Seth Lover, Antiquity are good for starters. Ant may be too high priced, but I love that pickup. My fav is the Brobucker but I don't know that he wants to go Custom Shop prices either.

Re: wanting to possibly replace the JB in LP

Rick - stop using the word "thin" to describe EVERY pickup with treble. The only thing that is thin here is your hair and your advice. The A2P does not have anywhere NEAR enough bite for AC-DC or Lynch Mob.

Now - GnR is obviously an A2P….so the OP is asking for "I want Fender Cleans and Marshall distortion" You are not gonna get both. That said, I can go all Slash by turning down the tone on my PG's or 59's. I can't go Angus by doing anything to an A2P.

I would go with a basic pair of 59's, or the 59 du Jour, the WLH. If you can't make your tone with those, and the Marshall, you just can't do it.

The Marshall AFD100 is my main rig, and I don't even think A2Pros make it sound like Appetite.
One of my least favorite pickups right up there with Gibson 490r/t

'59 set is the most versatile Duncan makes. There is nothing they can't do.
I love the tone chart and everything, but SD really needs to redo that thing. It's nowhere near as accurate as DiMarzio's page.
This forum has completely nerfed how amazing the '59 is purely based on that scooped mids idea.

Re: wanting to possibly replace the JB in LP

Im really considering the WLH or the 59' bridge. I'm keeping the Jazz neck I do like that one.I put an UOA5 in that pickup and it really made it sound nice. Just so both are 4 wire so I can coil split with my push- pulls.

Not for warm tones and midrange growl. The parent coils of the '59/Custom are both bright and thin, and being a hybrid accentuates that.

Sure if you can dial it. And the OP can always swap the magnet if necessary yet still have push from the bridge pickup without being compressed like JB. His guitar is mahog LP without maple anyway. A2P for playing AC/DC and Lynch is a failure.

Re: wanting to possibly replace the JB in LP

^^^^ Everything Blueman said.
The JB for me was a disaster when I wanted some straight clean room level cleans. Regardless of wind, magnet, or mojo, anything saying 10K or over is a deal breaker for me.
I use a Seth Lover with a fully charged A4 on one of my guitars. It does anything I want it to. EQ it with your amp. Don't need a new amp, sounds like. If I need AC/DC, I have a great boost/distortion pedal all in one, my Sparkle Drive.
Good luck,
SJB

Agreed, a '59/Custom with a warm magnet is a very good choice, but I didn't want to suggest modding that PU. But sometimes when I offer replacement magnets as an option some of the old ladies around here get upset.

When you agree with me - please do not publicly point it out.

Thank you.

Re: wanting to possibly replace the JB in LP

So what would your guys overall census be then I have it narrowed to the 59/custom hybrid with A2 or UOA5 mag swap. A 59 or WLH.What do you all think???

Re: wanting to possibly replace the JB in LP

I think the 59 will give you the biggest difference in sound from the JB. You will get more lows and softer highs, and less output. There will be less compression too. If you split the difference and go for a 59/Custom (I like these in super strats too), try it for awhile with the stock mag to see if there is a reason to change it.

Re: wanting to possibly replace the JB in LP

I think the '59 is an amazing building block.
You can always add distortion or compression.

For me, a WLH or an A2 '59/custom.

Re: wanting to possibly replace the JB in LP

Still trying to decide on what pickup to get,but in the meantime I swapped out my rough A2 in my JB and replaced it with a A3 and I like it. A lot like the A2,but slightly higher(clear)in a smooth way though. Its a RA3 so it smoothed out the highs and took some boominess away.

Re: wanting to possibly replace the JB in LP

I actually went with the regular A2P bridge. I'll let you know what I think after I put it in.Im sure I will like these they are great for rock and blues and give me the warmth I want.

Re: wanting to possibly replace the JB in LP

However, thank you all for the inputs I appreciate it!!!

Re: wanting to possibly replace the JB in LP

Guys wow!! I put the A2P in the bridge and took out the JB and I absolutely LOVE IT!!! Way better sound than the JB IMO. The A2P is warm and smooth with a softer brightness, nice mids and the bottom end sounds really nice in my LP. It's not flubby at all very nice bass response. I use a DSL Marshall amp. When the amp pushes the A2P it sounds fantastic plays nice blues/harder blues/classic rock and even gets into some metal. I think this is a very nice versatile pickup. When I turn gain down and push volume up it can get a nice AC/DC crunch. I'm so glad I made the decision to go with this p/u. Thanks Blueman335 for the A2P suggestion, and thank you to the others that chimed in with suggestions. Lower output pickup much.much better for my style.Nice P.A.F tone ,its open and airy, just like I wanted the compression is gone!!! lol. I have a higher gain amp so was no need for a higher output p/u. I even used some lower gain preamp tubes in my Marshall and have a really nice more vintage rock kinda sound now.I use NOS tubes and I love the way those older tubes sound in my amp. RFT 12ax7 V-1/RCA 12AU7 in V-2/I have a JJ 5751 lower gain tube in V-3 and Sovtek 12ax7 LPS in PI V-4 spot. Anyone want a JB I'm selling it lol.
