Thoughts?

In particular the Green Berets. I think it is time to get back to my speaker type of choice, but the WGS has a return/exchange policy which I would not get buying a greenback from XYZ retailer online or locally..EDIT- reason being I love GBs in a big box, but unsure how it will sound in my 1x12..the possibility exists I would want to go with their H30, or 65 clone for bigger low end.

No real opinions as I have not tried more than one or 2 and only for a few minutes but keep this in mind.

When they first hit they were, I believe $29 a pop "over the counter"...a builder I know bought a bunch of them at cost (which was even less then the OTC price!) and he said he was having a high failure rate, lots of cone cry and even speakers that were dead out of the box...

I have heard that many of those "issues" have been corrected and since the price has gone up over 100% I sure hope they have!

FWIW, the best Celestion sounds I've heard from a speaker that didn't say Celestion was the Weber stuff and the Brit speakers from Mojo Tone.

I have a Reaper and a Green Beret in my 212 Plexi combo I built. After a few hours of break in, they have been amazing. I have not questioned the purchase at all. I definitely recommend them.

I have a Retro 30 and a Reaper HP paired in a 2X12. Sound very nice together. I would offer the following comments. They are darker and a bit 'grittier' than their corresponding Celestion counterparts (as defined by WGS). I have another 2X12 with a Celestion V30 and G12H paired and they don't sound all that similar to me. Not meant to be a negative, but a difference. If you like darker/warmer and grittier sounds, go with the WGS.

The second observation is that they took much longer to break-in than Celestions or Eminences that I have. I estimate it was around 100 hours at 92 to 95 db (@8 ft.).

My preference seems to have shifted to the Eminence line. I like using the smaller (15 to 25 watt) amps and the higher efficiency of most Eminence models helps when the additional volume or headroom is needed.

Lots of good sound bytes on all three's websites to give you some insight.

Good stuff to know. I went ahead and ordered one. Figured I did not have much to lose. If it is too different from the GBs and BBs I am used to I can send it back for a refund.

My 4x12 is loaded half with G12-65s and half with whatever WGS calls their clone. I forgot which ones are where and can't find out without opening the thing. I always wanted to try a recording but the truth is this doesn't seem to be an issue.

I run my TM18 through a 1x12 with a WGS ET-65 and I love it. I don't have enough experience with other speakers to compare it to anything, but the amo sounds cool. So yeah.

I always thought their 65 clone was very good.
I bought 10 of their speakers when they first came om the market...30 bux each.
They really hit the ground running.
I am kind of an Eminence guy...but I would certainly put WGS up there with:
Emi
Celestion
Weber
etc etc etc.

I've debated building a 2x12 with WGS Green Berets many times. I still haven't reached a conclusion. I'd love to hear what you think.

I have a Retro 30 and a Vet 30 on hand now and like them a lot. Had the Retro in my Zinky Velvet at one time and the Vet in my Blackstar 1/12. That combo when running both together was amazing so over the last few days I pulled both and they are going as a pair into my old 1980's Fender 2/12 to be run under the Peavy Ultra + head I have. I replaced a Celestians 70/Eighty with the vet in the Blackstar and G12M 30 in the Zinky with the Retro and never looked back till now. I expect that Retro/Vet 30 speaker combo to absolutely rip when I get it in the old Fender!!

Seems like reviews are mixed about the Green Berets are far as accuracy, but heck even all the old and new celestions sound different, though all are in the same ballpark. I notice many of the poor reviews are old/from folks who bought them initially at the super cheap prices. "Current" reviews are very positive.

Ultimately its about the tone. If they are a quality speaker that gets into that true greenback territory without any severe tonal deficiencies fine. If not, I have no problem putting a modern Celestion in there, IME they sound fantastic once broken in.

I'v not used any WGSs myself, but I have been recommended an ET65/Retro30 pair for my 2x12 to go with my Splawn and SLO Clone. So I'm interested to hear what people think of them.

i started out with these paired in an avatar 2x12. It was a love/hate thing for me. I LOVED the et65 and absolutely HATED the retro 30.
They are opposite speaker types IMO. Where the et is smooth sounding the retro is a harsher version of a vintage 30. When i turned down the treble to tame the harshness a bit, the et sounded muffled.
I even tried the retro by itself to no avail. It had a nice deep low end going for it, but the rest was nails on a chalk board to me. Perhaps 50hrs or so isn't enough of a break in period. Either way, out it came and another et65 went in its place.

I want to try their reaper hp. I'd also give the vet30 a run.

Retro30 = great for modern metal
Et65 = everything else

As always YMMV

I've been to a couple of warehouses down in Mexico, but they didn't make speakers there.

Frankly, the WGS demos by vaughn are ridiculous. He uses that POS nighttrain cab that is partial open back with a GB vs. Whatever that much larger cab is with the green berets. Of course the greenback will sound like **** compared to the green beret. And he then claims he is about the engineering...any engineer worth a damn would do an honest apples to apples evaluation of each speaker in the same or similar cab.


Very misleading demos by WGS on youtube.

I have Green Beret in my 2X12 combo (Crate Vintage Club). After they've broken in, as Trevorus said above, they sound killer. Definitely worth looking into.

This forum software needs a " I got a Boner" smiley.

Even far from broken in, this thing kicks ass. Definitely right in there with typical modern greenbacks. Maybe a touch smoother and lighter on low end out of the box. Woody, missing low mids from the V30 filled in, barks,wider/bigger,more 3 dimensional than the V30. Despite the loss of some low end the amp sounds bigger, even with the gain rolled back further than normal.

Looking forward to it breaking in. It has been many moons since I have owned some GBs or BBs, and I am totally kicking myself for not going with some form of them in recent years...they were always my fave speaker. And they seem like a very good match for the H&K @18w where it is getting pushed much harder than the V30 was.
