Went Back To The 59N In My Love Rock..

STRATDELUXER97

Stratoblaster Tone Meister
I pulled the PGN out and went back to my 59N pickup...I like the EQ of the 59N alot better, plus it's smoother and doesn't have that "sizzle" and peak in the mids....The 59N just seems eq'd better for my ears, styles, and gear....I adjusted the 59N so it's about level with the plastic pickup holder and it still has plenty of output....I adjusted the screws a bit and managed to make the 59 alot more tolerable now...I liked the overall EQ and tone of the 59N in this guitar, but it was the boomy lows that I didn't like....I feel I can tolerate it and by bringing the pickup down,I should be fine....

I seem to also like the A5 magnets in my neck positions...

I also have a 59N in my Gibson SG Standard and I Love it....

I'm very sure that the PGN is loved by many but it just wasn't the right neck pickup for my tastes....... Also, maybe the 59 just has the correct EQ that I grew up hearing all these years, without the midrange spike?

Try the Pearly Gate's magnet in the 59. You might like it a lot.

I forgot to mention also, that I seem to prefer the A5 magnets in my neck positions....This is the scenario with my strats also...Maybe I don't like the "sweeter" vibe in the neck? I like tight, clean, clear, and articulate...The PGN is too middy and more aggressive...These last 2 characteristics is what probably turned me off...The 59N as is will work...I'll just adjust my gear a bit different now....Thanks for everyone's help on this....

I know what you mean about A5 in the neck, and I like it everywhere.

Try out a Jazz if you don't like the boominess of the 59. I found it to be boomy and undefined under gain, but the Jazz is perfect.

I think the 59 is the right pickup...The only other pickup I could make work, would be a Seth neck A5 magnet..The Jazz seems too anemic to me in the lows and it might be a bit in the other direction? I've backed the 59 down more in the neck spot and both times I've tryed it today,it sounded right to me as far as the overall balance and eq of the pickups...

The PGN just sounded wrong each time I'd pick up and play...The extra mids and aggression just didn't work in my case... :13:

Hey John I hear you. I keep going back to the 59n for it's glass and hollow character. I tried several a2 pickups in the neck position but I like the edge of the a5. The a2 has certain warmth to it though.. just depending on your style.
I like the a2 in the bridge position for sure. I like the a5 for the punchy stuff but I can definitely get along with the Seth Lover and a2pro.

Sorry John, couldn't resist. :)

Re: Went Back To The 59N In My Love Rock..

in my soon to arrive Carvin I was going to put a '59N and JB bridge in, which is my favorite combo. I'm curious about the alnico II pro though, have you tried it John? I found the Jazz to be really nice and clear but at the same time lacking lows and just kinda sterile. It didn't have the "mojo" that the '59 has.

Yep....The 59 is pretty hard to beat and I much prefer the snugness of the A5 in the neck...I have an A5 59B/Custom Hybrid in the bridge though,so I guess I just like the guitar with all A5....

Haven't tryed the A2 Pro in the neck and I feel the Jazz would be too lacking in the lows?

Re: Went Back To The 59N In My Love Rock..

I use to have a Custom/59 in my LP studio and I loved the sound of the 59 by itself. However I have never liked the way it blends with the custom and found the bass to be too invasive. So I swapped for a jazz and now I find it to be much better and more balanced even if I still prefer the tone of the 59 by itself. I'm now thinking to try a 59 set in another LP, sure it will kick ass.
