I've got a green beret sitting around somewhere I'm tempted to just toss in the can. I can't seem to get anyone to buy it except for about what it would cost to ship it out.
Compared to a modern chinese or UK celestion counterpart it sounds shrill, brittle, and one dimensional.

I've owned Celestions. Still have one. If one is looking for an exact clone for a Celestion that they love, buy the Celestion. The WGS speakers are basically "takes" on some of the Celestions, they aren't exact clones. I've got Veteran 30's which I personally prefer over Vintage 30's but I didn't buy them because I wanted a "cheap" Vintage 30. I bought them because they were marketed as having a tamer upper mid peak compared to the Vintage 30's. I liked what I heard from different demos. I've got 2 Veteran 30's paired with 2 ET 90's in a big 4x12 and it is a great sounding and versatile cab. A Retro 30 was better alone in a Peavey VK 112. I have some Invaders that I like as well. I don't think the WGS speakers are really "inferior", just different. Again, don't buy them if you really want a Celestion because you aren't going to get a clone.
And this is very, very important ... don't even consider them if you don't think they can possibly be worth a sheet because they don't cost enough or have the history, the right brand name or wont allow you any bragging rights. Even if you hear them in person and secretely like them, don't buy them for the aforementioned reasons and whatever you do, never admit to anyone that you even kinda thought it sounded ok. You'll flush your street cred right down the toilet and wont be able to live with yourself. :nono:

So, what we're saying is that they cannot possibly be as good as Celestion because of price... ok, to each their own, but sound "quality" is very subjective, and quality of materials is pretty much identical among the players in the guitar speaker market. It's stamped steel baskets, magnets which none of them actually make themselves anyway, and paper. One sells most of its offerings for less than $100, the other more. I think this is a case of the old maker riding their name as much as anything, and the cork sniffers eat it up.
I'm not denegrating Celestion, but I am saying I use WGS all the time, and I don't ever wonder if Celestion would be better. I've owned both, and WGS works for me, especially at the price difference.

WGS cost less because they are direct sale. (In the USA at least) Very little middle man costs like Celestion has.
In Canada, I'm seeing WGS prices increased though. The main distributor here has them for $97-$110 each for the popular models. Doesnt bother me much though. I still see the value at those prices.

They have a very long break-in, yes. My Green Beret saw at least 10 hours a week for 9-10 months play time at high volume.
I don't know about any other WGS speakers, but in comparing directly the EVH G12M to the WGS GB, there is no comparison. The Celestion is far more complex, sweet, and musical. Frankly, the Celesion sounded better even before it broke in, than the WGS did after months of use.
IDK about the rest of WGS' speakers, but based on my experience, I think I'd go Eminence next time, if I want an "alternate take".

Yeah, Im not sure that I'd choose a Green Beret for a single speaker option. I wouldnt even do a pair in a 2x12.
A quad in a 4x12 is optimal. The larger enclosure and higher handling capability is what was originally in mind/intended for that type of speaker to acheive the best results from it.

I have yet to play through a WGS that I didn't like. I think they are great speakers, and I have actually liked them better than the Celestions that they are putting their own spin on. I wouldn't put them in the "budget" speaker category by any means, as far as the quality goes. Right now, I have a Veteran 30 in my main amp and it sounds killer.

Funny that the company says 15 to 20 hrs break in lol then I talked to a dude that worked there said it takes time like any other speaker Hell I got 50 or so on mine, 150 hrs look out then! Seem like the celestions I had were bright and that maybe thats why I got rid a lot of amps and also didnt break them in time.
