What a difference a tube makes

Re: What a difference a tube makes

I like the ehx12ax7 for PI, i remember liking it more than the mullard ri for that spot. I like the tungsol best for v1 but my rotten luck is that they develop hum within two weeks :'(

I noticed that the jjs & chinese tubes have a distortion pedal sort of sound quality to the gain, whereas the ehx, tungsol & mullard ri have a od pedal kind of gain sound, smoother & not as focused.

I'm trying ehx 6ca7s next time, presently the jj 6ca7s i have are good but not what I'm looking for. Mine were from 2011, still working fine but need to try out new sensor stuff in the power section which I've not done yet.

I had the problem of new sensor 12AX7 tubes developing hums in V1 in one of my amps as well. It was just the new sensor brands. Chinese and old stock tubes were not affected. It turned out the electrolytic cathode cap was going bad. After it was replaced the problem went away.

The EH 6CA7 is close reproduction of the old Sylvania /GE originals. In recent tube rolling I found it had the strongest bass response, even more than the KT-66, and it also had more pure and open highs, but still retaining the "lush" mids of EL34s.

Re: What a difference a tube makes

And to address the general topic-My DSL likes the Sovtek LPS much better as a PI than the EHX or my old JAN5751s: Both thin the amp out. Huge difference from the LPS.
