Yeah well I think you know what I mean :)

Why would he need a pedal anyway?? I thought it didn't matter how good you sounded, as long as you were LOUD? :laugh2:

Come on, he meant a booster pedal, bitch!

Traynor YCV50Blue 50 Watt 1x12” Combo. Guitar Player had some good things to say about it last month. 50 watts is plenty. If this band you're trying to get into defines tone purely in terms of watts, they need educatin'. Your tone will be better than his Crate full stack, even if it is coming out of a little (OK, medium-sized) blue box. Add a cab later if you really need it to look more "rock". Then, be happy when you don't have to move the whole rig when you don't feel like it.

I've played that blue amp. Love it! Very good amp, and for the price, excellent value. Thing can rock. Nailed Welcome to the Jungle, sounded great for VH. Can do the 80s metal thing. It's probably the perfect choice...except...if he's playing metal and needs a "big amp" to be in the band, it might not give him the "street cred" he's looking for, even if it does sound amazing, esp. for a 500 - 600 dollar amp. There's not a whole lot of nameplate bragging rights for a small traynor combo. Even if it does kick butt.

Re: What amp should I buy?

Go after a Line 6 Spider II HD and 4x12 cab. A little more than $500 total but huge power, rock n roll (read half stack) look, decent versatility, pretty good tone for something non-tube.

Re: What amp should I buy?

100 watts?

My Blues Junior with the master on about 6 would be loud enough to fill your 'barn-like' space. And it's 15 watts.

Good amp and big amp are not synonymous. Many of the best amps out there PERIOD, are quite small compared to any gigantic half-stack you may want to get.

Also, solid-state sounds terrible turned up. Get a 30-ish watt tube amp. And if this band says that you have to have a 'big amp' to play with them, chances are good that the band isn't worth playing with.

Re: What amp should I buy?

My son, if you read the beginning of the thread, I have a fifteen watt amp. When was the last time YOU played in a barn? Actually, I kinda like the tube amp sound, can anyone recomend one over 65 watts (maybe even blue:jester:lol). Remember, I need some serious volume capacity, and mind blowing tone.

You've got a 15 watt SOLID STATE amp, he's got a 15 watt TUBE amp. There's a WORLD of difference there. And while I'm sure his amp could fill a barn, I doubt it could do it playing metal. Look at a Peavey ValveKing, Crate V-Series, Traynor, and a used 5150.

There's no comparison between solid state wattage and tube wattage. Tube wattage is MUCH louder. So before you make a decision based on wattage, make sure you pay attention to whether you're talking about a tube amp or a solid state amp. My 18 watt Budda (tube amp) would probably shake the barn down if you turned it even 60% of the way up, especially if you throw a good metal distortion pedal in front of it.

Seriously, if you go tube, you won't need anything over the 15 - 18 - 30 watt zone, and you may even need to get yourself an attenuator if you ever want to practice at home.

The exception to this (as someone else pointed out) is that if you need to play clean at loud volumes through a tube amp, then a higher wattage tube amp may be more appropriate for you - but I don't get the impression that's going to be an issue for you.

Used 5150 amp - can't argue with that if you're gonna play metal and want loud. There are a few on ebay right now that are pretty interesting.

Re: What amp should I buy?

Of course if you do go tube, your bandmates will be pissed cuz your tone is better than theirs.

Re: What amp should I buy?

Yup, a 15 watt tube amp will smoke a 15 watt solid state amp. For the solid state amp to keep up, it would been to be 3 times the power as the tube amp, or roughly 50 watts (don't know of any 45 watt amps). Even then the solid state amp will be struggling.

Re: What amp should I buy?

I have never read an entire thread till today. I read the whole thing so I would have supporting evidence for this following claim:

This is what makes me second guess having kids.

P.S.: you should just go and try out all the 40-50 watt tube amps at your local store and then you'll see how loud they really are. I've beeen using SS for 4 years and can't wait to get my hands on a tube amp, and I know I WILL NEVER need more than fifty watts of power, and thats incase I gig. If you're only playing at home and jam with one person once in a while, no more than 30 watts.

As Captain Planet says: "The Power Is Yours".

It comes down to your own logic.

Re: What amp should I buy?

I, for one, do not want an amp that is "big and loud." As you get older, you figure out that having an amp that sounds good is most important. Next on the list is an amp that you can easily carry in and out of the gig...no back breakers allowed (unless you have roadies on tour with you;) ).

Re: What amp should I buy?

Well, if I had that kind of money (ie the metalhead), I would probably be concentrating more on convincing my dad to get me a real car, instead of the busted-ass piece of junk he's trying to get me to go for. (Id have to replace the transmission, and thats a real bitch). So, yea ill have to check out the laney idea.

Re: What amp should I buy?

What about a Traynor YCV50 Blue 1x12 combo amp with new JJ's for 305$? someone tell me im not a moron. Seriously, this whole amplifier thing is freakin me out. Pickups= 4th grade level guitars=5th grade level amps=PhD

Re: What amp should I buy?
