What amp should I buy?

Re: What amp should I buy?

Dude it's not really that hard.. Try to really think about what sound you are trying to achieve (remember it depends on your guitar and pickups also), and then think about how much money you would like to spend, etc... The best is to try some out before you buy, but if you don't have that possibility (just like me), try surfing 'round the net for some reviews, soundclips, etc. etc.

What about a Traynor YCV50 Blue 1x12 combo amp with new JJ's for 305$?
Since it goes for $600 new online I'd say you've got yourself a good deal. It will certainly be LOUD, I can't turn my Peavey classic 30 past 1 1/2 without the family or the neighbors dogs complaining. Hope that barn is sturdy.

You are NOT a moron. You were smart enough to ask a question and follow up when most of us told you 100w was to much. It takes effort to be an educated consumer.

BTW what amps are the other members of the band you want to join playing?

Re: What amp should I buy?

The Traynor will work, but you might want to throw a pedal in front of it to get a metal tone.

Re: What amp should I buy?

If you want louder than the Blue Traynor YCV 50 check out the Traynor YCV 80. It's got 80 watts, 2 speakers, so you could add a 2X12 extension cab, and you've got your stack. If you go used, you can probably swing all of this for under $700. The YCV 80 can easily do metal. You will not need any distortion pedals. Check it out. A few years ago I was in your shoes, and I almost bought a Peavey XXX stack, 120 watts. I am SOOOOO glad I bought a Mesa combo instead. It is "only" 50 watts but is as loud as any 100 watter out there. Now that I play live, I'm always miked. There is absolutely no need for a full 100 watt stack except to look cool.

Re: What amp should I buy?

The other members are: lead guitarist w/ marshall 1/2 stack, bassist w/ 60 watt solid state alesis. drummer w/ full pearl drum set. On other subjects, what pedal should I put on it?

What kind of Marshall? MG, AVT, or tube?

Re: What amp should I buy?

Dude.. you wanted a fullstack, and your buddy has a halfstack, but your bassist only has a 60 watt SS amp? How is he supposed to keep up with you?

Re: What amp should I buy?

Okay, all other band members have SS amps, lead guitarist I dunno what it is. Bassist has extra speakers to attach to amp.

50w tube combo will be loud enough.

Well, as far as budget goes, since it's christmas, and since I can probably get my parents to split the cost (that way neither of them thinks its all that expensive) I could probably run anywhere from 300-500$. As for that cowboy remark, we dont have cowboys in kansas but we do know how to give you people from Denmark a good old fashioned ass kickin'

hey motorboy I would watch your language around here ...could get you into trouble..please take my advice on this before your banned.

Re: What amp should I buy?

If you only want 100 watts and dirt cheap, and play metal, then it won't matter. If you want something good, you're going to have to be willing to build it or pay for it. If all you need is loud and cheap, there are plenty of brands that will fit this. Fortunately for me, I don't know their names.

woah, i just went to musiciansfriend.com YOU CAN GET A CRATE HALF-STACK FOR 500$ that is what I meant when I said a A REALLY BIG amp. I want an amp that has balls. I want an amp, that when I joke to someone that its about to blow up, they start to run. There's a reason I chose Motorboy as my screen name (for those of you who dont know your rock history, its a tribute to Motorhead). This is a band whos slogan is "Everything louder than everything else" another great roch slogan is "If you cant be good, at least be loud" Im not all that good of a guitar player... So I have to be really focking loud

Yeah, a crate halfstack that you only replace later in life because it sucks. Good amps are going to cost money because the manufacturers 1) made an almost perfect amp that 2) people will pay for.

I've played through a crate halfstack. The band the dude was in is made up of people who only want to play loud. He said he was replacing it because it wasn't loud enough. I guess he likes bleeding ears. Anyways, we cranked his up. He still puts a microphone to it during shows. I can take my 85W (100W? not sure what they were rated this year) 1972 fender twin reverb 2x12" at max volume and get a natural overdrive that already sounds louder than his does at max volume. Beyond that, mine will drive another twin or even quad, and so will my Boss ME-50 multieffects board. Even the '59 Fender Twin Reverb reissues (bought 2005) that I played with on stage at the same show (we were on before they were) at volume 3 were insanely louder than their setup. Beyond that, in a decent show, you mic the amps and the house runs the sound. The advantage is that with a lower wattage tube amp, you can turn down the volume and sound better than they can.

I'm not trying to make you go with a tube amp, but wattage is overrated. Seriously. I can build a 1000W amp, but unless it sounds good, no one is going to care how loud I am unless 1) I cause their ears to explode, 2) they can't sleep at night. And even then, they are going to want to kill me, not compliment me.

You need to give people a ballpark figure for your budget. My "on the fly" recommendation would be Tech 21 Power Engine 60.

Re: What amp should I buy?

Well, actually, im seriously thinkin that Id like a tube amp, but I hav no money and no way to get any (legally). Also, i no longer am trying to get into the band that I was trying to get into the bcause two of the members got into a fight over creative control and laid waste to each other's amps :jester: (one friend got it on sound, 's like hendrix crossed with chevelle:laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: ). and the lead guitarists an ass aniway. So, trying to start mi own band, but the other guys wont do metal so I need tube aniway.

Re: What amp should I buy?

Ive missed half this thread because i got bored but i read your quote on motorhead, well i know the motorhead guitarists son, our bands have played a few gigs together, in his band they both use 75 watt combo's...

Is that enough proof?

Dude, if you can get that amp at that price, RUN, don't walk, RUN to the store and grab it. Seriously, it is a sweet amp. Nice gain levels on it. Can do metal well, but if you really want to ramp it up, it's easy enough to throw a metal distortion pedal in front of it. If memory serves, you can get an extention cab if you want to make it like a bigger setup.

Check it out at http://www.yorkville.com/products.asp?type=32&cat=18&id=318

You won't be sorry. Great price. Great versatility. Great tone. And a 50 watt tube amp will get loud. And personally, I think the blue tolex rocks.
