What are your top 5 "Grail" tones?

Re: What are your top 5 "Grail" tones?

Oh hell yeah! That album is my favorite In Flames album. First album I ever heard with them, and the only one I keep coming back to.

I remember putting on "Soundtrack to your escape" when that came out. I thought I had the wrong disc. It didn't seem like the same band. (From Whoracle to Soundtrack was quite the leap...) :)

yes, their sound has really changed a lot over the years... a lot of hate, but I love most of their work, although their old stuff is my favorite (especially whoracle)

Re: What are your top 5 "Grail" tones?

Some great suggestions here...apparently I have different ideas of what great tones are, or haven't been exposed to a lot of heavier music. I will add 1 heavier tone, though...Dave Murray's neck solo tone is wonderful (where did that go over the years?).

I don't know why I forgot to mention this one. Looking for a better lead neck tone was the reason I started to try Seymour Duncan, I tried the hot rails thinking on Dave Murray but then I realized it really was not for me, then tried the jazz which is great but I eventually realized I like single coils better than humbuckers for neck lead. I have to say his neck solo really shined in the current tour.

Re: What are your top 5 "Grail" tones?

Oh yeah, I forgot...........The lead tone in this, and of course the playing from Gary Moore always blows me away.

Ty Tabor from King's X in the "Dogman" album.
Amazing rhythm tone, chunky as hell. My favorite rhythm tone ever.

Mastodon in "Crack the Skye".
Lots of "unusual" tones for a Metal album, it's layered as hell and very diverse overall, but it has some sweet fuzzy, univibe-y lead tones that make me horny and drool. :cool3:

James & Kirk at "Load".
Unreal tones all over that album.

Ritchie Blackmore in the "Live in Paris 1975" Deep Purple album.
Oh my God. Best distorted Strat tone ever:

Marty Friedman's lead tone in Megadeth's "Rust in Peace" album.
Pure Seymour Duncan JB bliss in the hands of the best lead player in the history of Metal.

Re: What are your top 5 "Grail" tones?

All good.

Maiden, Priest, Metallica, AC/DC, Dio (Dream Evil had some good tones), Lynch.

I'll add Criss Olivia from Savatage. I like the earlier stuff with a "wall of sound" like Sirens, Dungeon, Hall and Power.

Re: What are your top 5 "Grail" tones?

tele into a twin
335 into a deluxe reverb
strat via a fuzzface into a jtm
330 into a 5e3
gretsch into an ac30

Re: What are your top 5 "Grail" tones?

ZAkk on No More Tears - pooh, that's an effing awesome one. Great solo period.

A buddy's band used to cover that one and somehow used to sound even better than the original. At least, they sounded better live than Zakk did.

Re: What are your top 5 "Grail" tones?

Jake E Lee-Badlands (debut)
Ty Tabor on Dogman
Guthrie Govan-Eric
EVH-Push Comes to Shove
Steve Lukather (Los Lobotomys) Never Walk Alone

Live stuff
Pat Travers-Go For What You Know
Michael Schenker's cocked wah on Strangers.
Guthrie Govan-Cave Dweller (The Aristocrats)

Lots of great mentions in this thread.

Re: What are your top 5 "Grail" tones?

Kim Thayil on just about any recording but Badmotorfinger and Superunknown were stellar.
Almost anything Jerry Cantrell has ever released, but Them Bones and We Die Young are at the top
John Petrucci's tones on Images and Words were incredible. Metropolis and Pull Me Under had just about everything in there too.

Re: What are your top 5 "Grail" tones?

George Lynch with his harmonics and hollow sound. also the neck pickup lower gain here.

#3. The thick warm sounds of Akio Shimizu of Anthem

Re: What are your top 5 "Grail" tones?

Mine are

#1 Jimi Hendrix tone from 'Jimi Plays Monterey' - top guitar sound EVER to my ear, never heard a better one. And it's a pretty simple rig, a CBS strat with rosewood neck in to a germanium fuzz face, in to a Marshall Super Lead (maybe with 6550 tubes if I remember correctly)

#2 VH1 - I don't have anything else to say about it

#3 The Edge tone from 'Under a blood Red Sky' - ok, this seems a bit odd but that sound is the reason why I took a guitar

I can't classify anything else as my Grail tone, I stay with my 3

Re: What are your top 5 "Grail" tones?

Jimi Hendrix -- Machine Gun, either version at Fillmore East. Devastating. But there's a long list of Jimi tones I could put here (Wind Cries Mary, Red House, a specific version of Hear My Train a Comin'/Lonesome Train Blues, Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)), so this is just a placeholder, in a way.

David Gilmour -- Comfortably Numb, both solos. The song that made me want to play electric.

Joe Satriani -- If I Could Fly, solo tone. Bright, vocal, sings.

AC/DC -- Highway to Hell, rhythm. More tweezed-sounding than a lot of Malcom's riffs, this one just nails the vibe like a laserbeam.

Mark Knopfler -- Brothers in Arms, solo tone. Gives me chills without fail.
