WHAT DID I DO?...........OH NO!...........

I have need to change up one of my strato-partscaster with a tele pickup. I tried to do my own wax potting on an Antiquity tele pickup and it seems I was successful, I am now reading 2.0 meg ohms when I measure the pickup. Did I ruin my pickup? Help please.

Re: WHAT DID I DO?...........OH NO!...........

That's as good as an open circuit. I'd look for a broken wire to or from the coil.

Well, that ain't right.
No telling where something might have gone wrong. Is there a reason you potted it?

You may have invented the ultimate metal pickup.

I was using my fingers to maintain a connection on the wires so my body was included in the resistance reading. The actual reading is 11.3 meg ohm which still doesn't do me any good.

Thinking I would eliminate any possibility of potential squealing if playing high gain. I blew it on this one.

That'd be the resistance of your base plate beteen the two solder lugs. :D

Re: WHAT DID I DO?...........OH NO!...........

Think I'll just send it to Seymour and find out how much it costs to repair it.

Re: WHAT DID I DO?...........OH NO!...........

probably about as cheap to find a used one. how hot was the wax? ive potted lots of pups and never had one die. the only issue ive ever had is with soft humbucker bobbins if the temp is too high

Re: WHAT DID I DO?...........OH NO!...........

I believe the temperature was around 150 degrees F.

Re: WHAT DID I DO?...........OH NO!...........

that should be fine, i usually keep mine around 155. bad readings at the solder lugs? no visible break?

Re: WHAT DID I DO?...........OH NO!...........

I think I see a break but I do not have the finesse to unwind a turn or two to resolder the coil. I am afraid I will make it worse.

Re: WHAT DID I DO?...........OH NO!...........

If it isn't a break it could be a short circuit if the insulation got burned through. Which is still not really helpful to state, but you can fix a break; I have.

(Ignore the tape- held up for ten years that way though!)

Its like 120 degrees in Socal right now

I say open em up, put em in the sun all day, and see if that fxes anything (probably wont but wth why not)

For a break in the coil wire, is it as simple as just unwinding a turn and twisting them together like that?
How to strip the coating off the wind wire- solvent or heat? Or some other method?

I did this in the past, but it is not save on the long run. The solder joint could damage the coil when pushed into it.
First look where is the nearer end to the solder point (end of the coil). Unwind it to the solder point and make a new connection of the coil to the hookup wire.
Even unwinding a foot of wire makes no difference to the coil.

Re: WHAT DID I DO?...........OH NO!...........

I contacted Seymour Duncan if I could send him some pickups ( I actually have 6 pickups with the similar issue, most were given to me like that) to have him or Maricela repair them and they want re-wind them at $55 for the single coils, $20 off for the Seymour Duncan pickups. I cannot afford that. I had a vender from TDPRI offer to look at the one pickup for repair and I contacted by PM and his' business email to find out what it would cost to repair existing coils. We'l see what the reply entails.

Re: WHAT DID I DO?...........OH NO!...........

I'd say on the less expensive pickups, it might be worth experimenting to see if you can attach the coil wire to the output wire. Or find some cheap pickups to experiment with.
