what do you guys think of the tweed bassman ltd reissues?

Re: what do you guys think of the tweed bassman ltd reissues?

So THD now makes a compatible Hotplate? I know Weber makes a "Bassman harness" to use their attenuator, but it seems like a hassle.

WTF Are you talking about?

Alot of classic recordings that "seem" like a marshall are bassmans, they have AMAZING OD! (Think plexi.)

The only way you wouldn't get that thing belching up the flames from hell would be to play it at low volumes. Then, what's the point of owning an amp like it?

Anyway, they're not really a clean amp... I don't know how you got that...

Re: what do you guys think of the tweed bassman ltd reissues?

thats not entirely true, they can get a great clean tone. plug a tele in and bam, perfect country tone.

that said, i got mine for the dirt

you know how hard it is to turn an amp up at guitar center? they don't let you! let me put it that way. call me stupid, you know i quit. it's a waiste of my time to be here and TRY and be helpful. but when you guys think my opinion is wrong all i get is ridiculed and what it seems like ridiculed. you think people like that? you think that makes people happy? WELL IT DOESN'T!

Re: what do you guys think of the tweed bassman ltd reissues?

relax man

we're not ridiculing you, we're just correcting you. Everyone appreciates it when people give advice, but when the advice is wrong, well, you can't just let it go, people will believe what we tell them, you know?

you're not stupid, just new to the game, we were all there at one point, just stick around & learn some stuff man, like i said go ahead & give advice but when it's a false statement someone has to correct it

Re: what do you guys think of the tweed bassman ltd reissues?

OK......my experience is owning some reissue tweed bassmans. They sucked until I put a Hoffman board with some mods and detuned the amp a little. That one had the eminence speakers. I changed a lot of things in there to make it sound more like a real one. If the LTD uses the same transformers and schematic as the reissue it is not a replica of an original. Look at the schematics.

I did play through an original and have heard a few in my years and the reissues sound nothing like them until you start changing a lot of things.

For that kind of money have someone build you a true replica using Mercury magnetic transformers and Mallory 150 caps. You can get some old P10R's on ebay, I have 6 of them. Have them reconed as close to the old specs as possible. Or get 4 old C10Q's since the prices for P10Q's are ridiculous.

Bam.......there you go.

I think you will be happier that way than having anything Fender can make from their factories.

This is my opinion, but I do build my own amps and guitars now because of the junk being made by companies today, not to mention their prices.

It's actually a very easy amp to build and responds well to slight changes in preamp cap and resistors values. You can really dial in your sound. Or use a jumper cable and use both channels.

I would be more inclined to build a Webervst kit rather than buy a Fender.

The key to the whole amp is which transformers they use. Are they exact copies of the real tweed bassman as you can get from Mercury magnetics or are they the same stuff they use in the reissue Super Reverb and 59 bassman?

Plus, are they giving you the reissue Jensen P10R's? Not a bad speaker but nothing compares to the old Jensen's tone wise.

The weak link in original bassman's were the speakers, the p10R's could not handle the power and lows. They did upgrade to the Jensen P10Q which are going for about $200 each these days. They also put out a lot of bass.......way too much for me. That's why the later Marshall MKII heads did change one channel to cut the bass down(they are basically the same amp). It really shows how much bass when you turn up the volume ......wow....hey.....it's a bass amp right.

But the bottom line is.........do you really know what an original bassman sounds like and is that what you want. Or do you want what the LTD really is which I am sure is nothing like a real tweed bassman.

+1

I've decided that the Bassman RI is my next amp...woot!

It IS in the ballpark though..very nice amp, and new, and with a warranty, and you don't have to worry about FRYING yourself if you touch the wrong place while you're "building" it. Having said this I wish I still had my 58.....:smack:

Re: what do you guys think of the tweed bassman ltd reissues?

i think these amps are great.. with a humbucker guitar i think they overdrive quite easily, its still loud, but not rediculously loud in order to overdrive it. With a single coil guitar, they can get a great clean tone.

definately in my top 3 fav amps. its just a great design

yeah sorry, it just seems like there's been A LOT of correcting lately. even of my own opinion (i.e. my "not-so-in depth review of prs" thread). people seem to like to tell me that my ears are wrong and that only way to go is a gibson dc faded.

Re: what do you guys think of the tweed bassman ltd reissues?

i play a tele. would i not be able to get good od with this amp? do you have to play humbuckers for that on the bassman?

Re: what do you guys think of the tweed bassman ltd reissues?

The humbuckers help push it into break up earlier. You'll have to bump the volume up more with single coils to get to that break up point.

However, an OD wouldn't be a bad idea. The first time I tried this amp, I used a Fulltone OCD and I switched off between my tele and Les Paul. Both sounded VERY good with the OCD. It really made this amp become a tonal monster. The cleans were amazing, and then you'd click on the OCD and you got the whole classic rock Marshall thing going on that was stellar as well. The amp takes pedals really well.

Re: what do you guys think of the tweed bassman ltd reissues?

I love this amp, but make sure you get one diffrent than the floor model at GC. I went through 3 before finding a Bassman that had nothing wrong. (3 different GC's, they all only had the floor model in stock. The final Bassman came directly from Fender.) The amps on the floor just take such a beating.

Or you could just buy it from a different place......Its just such a hassle. And they guys who work there just try to tell you the amps fine everytime. I went in there twice cause the amp would break up into a loud static crackling hum everytime i played too hard. The manager would just play really soft and tell me it was fine. I had to rip the guitar out of his hands and play it for myself before he believed me

Sorry, Im just so sick of gc, but who isnt? Haha I could go on forever. In the end, great amp, I would go for it. Just make sure you buy one in decent shape.

a tele with this amp, cranked, is about the same ammount of overdrive as you'd get playing a les paul through a blackface fender

and cream - don't let it bother you, trust your ears

Re: what do you guys think of the tweed bassman ltd reissues?

Nothing personal guys but some of you are very miss-informed. I have read some of the replies and just shake my head.

I am not trying to insult anybody, on the contrary, that's not my intention. I'm just pointing something out.

A tele with this amp cranked is about the same as a LP through a BF. That's like saying a Chevy is the same as a Ford because they both have 4 tires. Never mind what pickups, strings, pedals and the settings of the amp are.

Dude, I know you're 18 but think a little before you make statements like that.

The tried and true method of playing a strat or tele successfully with these amps is to jump the channels. As done on the older 4 input Marshall's, since they are very similar amps.

really, some of the statements made here are just ludicrous.

My opinions are based on almost 40 years of playing and owning "a lot" of fender amps and some Marshall's.

But yes they are just my opinions.

The difference is I do not make statements unless I am close to 100% sure I know what I am talking about.

I do have a question about the person who said don't buy one from the floor. People used it a lot and it takes a beating.

Gee.......so does gigging. So if it can't hold up to a music store what makes you think it will hold up after about 20-30 gigs?

That's just my logic, I guess I'm just thinking out loud.

It's pretty easy... Most have a sound proof room and tell you to crank it. (At least mine does, they put all their best amps in there and usually try to push you in there.)

That said, yes, you can get cleans. But to me they sound very warm for cleans. (Plugging in with p-90s at wispering volume, I was still getting a very noticable crunch, that smoothed out wonderfully for leads. The more gas you give it, the better it gets.)

And dude, usually you don't come off putting an "opinion" out. You usually insult things that alot of people hold sacred. When you start doing that, people get a foul taste. Calling a bassman "too clean" would be a good example. Or calling Rickenbacker's flagship color "poopy" would be another.

If you can't handel some backlash after you insult things, maybe you shouldn't be insulting things.

Re: what do you guys think of the tweed bassman ltd reissues?

I have liked the ones I have played and heard. The newr (or the tube rectifier versions) sound better to me.

i was talking about the ammount of OD you get assuming both have stock pickups, not the actual sound. The actual sound is way different, but i've played both examples & the ammount of OD is about the same, talking about like the vibroverbs & aa864 bassmans & such

as far as not buying one off the floor, i'm usually picky about that. If it's at a store that metal kids or punk kids frequent, or GC, i'll make them order one for me, but if it's at EM shorts i'll buy it off the floor. Reason being, i know EM is one of the most respected stores in the nation & they move A LOT of stuff, so it's not used that much before i get a chance to buy it. Plus everyone that goes in there, for the most part, plays types of music i play

whereas the other store, some 'tard could come in every day, pick up an EMG loaded jackson, throw an octave pedal infront of it, scoop the mids & boost the bass, and play 'smells like teen spirit' for 3 hours at a time. Not only does this wear out the tubes but the speakers also get broken in for the style that he's playing, which would take even LONGER for me to reverse that whole thing.
