I was nosing through Ebay the other day and came across this auction.

What do you think? I'm thinking it might be a good project to tinker with and get a half decent tweed-like amp.

It actually looks like a halfway decent deal. To me, the "hard work" of a DIY amp is the cabinet adn chassis. Drill holes in metal is not my idea of fun. This thing comes with transformers and tube sockets already mounted. Worst case, the circuit sounds like ****, so you gut it and hand-wire a real Fender circuit point-to-point or on a pre-made tag board.

The transformers look pretty light-weight to me. They are obviously cheap, and quality iron is one of the big factors that separates "good" (expensive) amps from "meh" (cheap) amps. However, if you limit your design to 6V6's, then the transformer will be slightly over-qualified power-wise, and you'll get better overall sound. You might have to fool around with impedance matching a bit, since it was apparently designed for 6L6s.

As you say, most of the work has been done. It could always be upgraded over time to suit needs/valves etc.
