What do you mean by "boxy"?

What does it mean when someone refers to an amp's tone as "boxy"? Can you point me to any audio clips or tunes as examples?

P.S. Here's a banana for anyone who's hungry:

Re: What do you mean by "boxy"?

A lot of mids and a narrow sounding compressed tone. That's what I think it means anyway

Re: What do you mean by "boxy"?

Boxy is a pretty much straight-ahead description -- the tone sounds like you and your amp are inside a cardboard box. Very flat, 2-dimensional tone, no space, air, depth, complexity, etc., to it.

At least that's my understanding of it.

Re: What do you mean by "boxy"?

What is the 800Hz-2KHz range?

Typically the mid-frequencies. The stuff that you're going to hear the most easily.

An amps "Middle" knob at the EQ section will most likely adjust the volume of a frequency somewhere in the 800 hertz to 2000 hertz range, roughly. For example, the amp might be designed to adjust the bandwidth around 1000 hertz.

If you have Winamp or something similar you can mess around with the on-board graphic EQ to see what effect it will have to the music you're listening to.

if this is right how can a vox be considered boxy they r one of the most 3d amps out there

Re: What do you mean by "boxy"?

Based on the description of "boxy," I would never characterize an AC30 that way unless you're really screwing up the EQ.

Re: What do you mean by "boxy"?

But that's Brian May's tone, which is a very singular one. The Vox is only a part of that tone, and I think he got it from his Deacy (sp?) as well.
Maybe so, but at least we're achieving some common understanding of what "boxy" sounds like. :)

Re: What do you mean by "boxy"?

I think the Deacy was for the layered harmony guitars, and the Vox was for the single guitars... Shamefully my Queen history is a bit rusty.......

Re: What do you mean by "boxy"?

It means you sound like this guy:
BoxyBrown.gif

Meatwad: "Meet my new best friend, Boxy Brown."
Master Shake: "Meet your new dead best friend!"
Boxy Brown: "Uh uh, fool. Step back."
Meatwad: "You best listen to Boxy, now. He don't play."
