What do you think of Ed Roman and his guitars?

A friend of mine went to Las Vegas a week ago to get his tickets for the Manny Pacquiao - Erik Morales boxing match on Saturday (Sunday morning here in the Philippines).

He told me via phone that he chanced upon this store that someone named Ed Roman owns. My friend has a daughter that likes to play "strat gods" music and when she showed him that she could play Riviera Paradise and Cliffs of Dover in their entirety, he decided that it's high time for her to have a real guitar. He saw this "Perlcaster (spelling?)" that has ball-bearing tremolo that looked high class. The problem was that the attendants creeped my friend out. They allegedly had the "scratch it and you're dead" look and the store apparently had "turn your cellphones off" rules and the like. Ed Roman also was only available for conversation via appointment.

I myself am curious with the "Perlcaster" and the ball-bearing trem. What do you think? Is he better of buying through Warmoth or perhaps G&L?

Thanks in advance!

I've not personally dealt with Ed Roman, but there are PLENTY of stories. Unfortunately most seem to be of the negative variety. Hopefully some that do have experience with him will chime in soon...

Kinda took the words right out of my mouth and the same expression off of my face.

Use the search button, TO had a good thread a bit ago with experiences from both good and bad camps :)

Ed has a flashy website and plenty of endless opinions, but I doubt you'ld find many people here, or on the Les Paul Forum who think much of him. I get the impression he's decended from weasels :laugh2:

Re: What do you think of Ed Roman and his guitars?

I like him, I've bought from him, I will again.

I think he has some Grade A designs I am looking into the ball bearing trem too for an upgrade on my strat. I love the Pearlcaster Scepter looks and features. The Quicksilver is a great PRS looking competitor.

He doesn't like vintage, he doesn't like tradition, and he doesn't care for imports, that's him for better or ill.

ROFLMAO!!!!!

I love it, I gotta have it!!!

He's better off buying a used US strat or G&L Legacy/S500- great guitars and plenty of them around at very reasonable prices - I read an article sometime ago on the advantages/disadvantages of ball bearing trems - to make a long story short the article claimed there was actually more friction on the ball bearing trem than on a knife edge trim.

They're after me lucky charms!!!

I will never deal with Ed 'tiny' Roman again, he's a shyster plain and simple. Look here to read some stories of our little leprechaun friend's antics............caveat emptor.

From the sotries I have heard about him, I wonder why nobody has beat the hell out of him yet? If he did me like he supposedly did the people in the stories, I would fly to Vegas and break his damn legs promptly.

Re: What do you think of Ed Roman and his guitars?

And when your done there, do a search on Ed Roman on www.harmony-central.com

I've never seen more negative comments. I've been at his shop in Vegas and it's like going to the museum, silent. Nobody comes to help you out and every guitar says don't touch. Hundreds of guitars with these signs on each one. Wacky & Creepy vibe.

Re: What do you think of Ed Roman and his guitars?

i think he is a tool and his prices on some things are plain stupid...he has (still has it) an Ibanez J. Yuenger (from white zombie) signature iceman i wanted to buy from him so i called up (this was before i knew about his oh so great reputation  ) and asked about it...i think i could have ordered a custom shop les paul for less lol..what a jackass!!

I believe there's video floating around the web of someone beating him up at a NAMM show...
