For me, having a low out put single coil pickup in between two high output humbuckers is a godsend. Helps me escape the humbucking sound when I want to, even though there's a major volume difference. My Duncan Distortion and PAF pro distort way too easy and sound a bit too sterile for cleans. Combining them with my Vintage Rails (yes, I know it's not a true single coil) helps them clean up nicely.

i'll be 100% honest for you..9 times out of 10...nothing...they just seem to get in the way lol so i try to stick to guitars without middle pickups and on my strat i have the middle PU down real real low...

Lew, that's the reason why I now use Schaller/Eyb Megaswitch E for all my guitars equipped with 3 PUs. Pos 1 2 4 5 like a Strat, Pos 3 is bridge+neck parallel which I like much better - especially with HBs.

I've got the same switching set up on my strat with a SM-1 Mini Humbucker in the neck position. The position 3, has that cool Tele middle sound which is way more useful than the middle pickup by itself.

More bite than the neck, fatter than the bridge. Smooth sustain.

I use my middle pup for lower gain organic bluesy stuff...
I remember hearing Bonnie Raitt uses it alot for her slide tones,
so when I want to simulate slide with the bar, it works out
great.

I don't use it for high gain sounds tho.

I only use mine when im playing clean chords and maybe if i ever play punk stuff which doesnt happen that often.

I only like it in the 2nd or 4th postion with single coils or tapped buckers. Otherwise, they're pretty useless to me.

My strat used to be a fat strat, so the neck and middle combined had some use to me.
Now it has a hot rails type pickup in the neck position, so the middle pickup is unused, and adjusted as low as possible.. The switch is wired so that I get 2 hummer guitar style switching. Suits me just fine. I guess some like 'em, some don't. I don't.
