What does modern high-gain mean to you? (NAD related)

So I just got my new amp yesterday, and I was reading through the instruction manual. It describes its tones as going up to modern high-gain. Honestly, I feel like this is very subjective.

How would you describe it? What amp and/or band hits that button for you? Personally, I think nothing does it like a 5150/6505 or Fryette UltraLead. I don't think I listen to much modern high-gain music, so I can't name bands easily, but I know those tones.

When I think Modern Hi Gain, i think 5150 or it's equivalents, Mesa Rectifier Series, Soldano SLO, and certain Marshalls.

I think of the 80s truthfully. Gained out, juiced up amps. Amps that evolve and sound better the more and more they are pushed

I can go with that, loosely.

Some marshalls with 4 preamp tubes, I wouldn't consider hi-gain whatsoever.

JCM900 for instance, I played a Hi-gain/Dual reverb, and it was clean with a hair of fuzz.

This is how I look at it:

Vintage High Gain - Black Sabbath
Classic High Gain - Van Halen
Modern High Gain - Killswitch Engage

You're right though, it is subjective.
Vintage and Classic could be debated. Modern is pretty obvious.

Thats actually pretty good.... I was thinking Metallica for early Modern, and Dimebage instead of a metalcore band.

Yeah, I would call early Metallica Classic, and something like Pantera or In Flames would also fit as Modern.

I kinda think of high gain as something that does that JCM 800 with a tube screamer all on it's own.
The classic eighties high gain, for me, would go to Judas Priest.

When I got my almost trusty Ashdown Fallen Angel it promised more gain than most people could cope with, and I'd call it a high gain amp but most metal heads would be disappointed.

It's what you get with a hot rodded Marshall, or anything made after that era.Anything that has 4 or more gain stages.

Vintage High Gain - Black Sabbath
Classic High Gain - Van Halen
Modern High Gain - Killswitch Engage

Van Halen wasn't high gain... it was high overdrive. If you search Youtube there's clips of isolated tracks off some of their songs and his guitar is relatively clean with a fair bit of speaker breakup.

I'd go like this....

Vintage High Gain - High gain as the result of a pedal into an amplifier.... Sabbath, Hendrix, Rhoads.

Classic High Gain - Early Mesa and Hot-Rodded Marshalls.

Modern High Gain - More percussive, more aggressive, more midrange heavy.

It means a sound that will hurt my ears.

It means a sound that has the musicality removed from it.

It means an industrialised version of what was once a musical sound, which i find okay as an effect but it has been waaay overdone.

It means a type of music and people that i have limited time for usually.

It means, in guitar terms, equipment that i have no time for.

It means, generically, the typical "oh here's something new, let's overdo it to the max until people choke to death on it".

It means fake agression by people who wouldn't know real anger and agression of it bit them on the arse, and who can only express it as a hollow cliche.

It means aggravation most times i set foot inside a music shop.

It means my areas of endeavours are more sparsely populated, which suits me fine.

It means, in writing this, that i am probably old in the head.

It ultimately means nothing to me as along as i can avoid it. Should i be trapped in a position where i cannot avoid it ..... all your fake agression will be exposed for what it is.

Compare this to the original and you'll get a good idea of the difference between old and modern high gain. The pinch at 36 sec. is a perfect example of how juicy and fluid modern high gain can sound.
