What does SD do with returned pickups?

Might depend on the condition. If it's pretty clean and tests good and passes all QC checks, they could just replace the lead wire and repackage.

Hmm... I suppose they could keep them around for ultra-fast "warranty repairs" now that I think about it. I doubt they repackage and sell as "new"... is that even legal?

As much as people didn't really go for those guitars, they were also a ridiculous price.

Even if the guitar was total shit, you could have at least stripped the pickups, tuners, and bridges out and used them in something else.
