What gear do you like but others hate?

Re: What gear do you like but others hate?

Swimming pool route Strats. They get bashed alot. I like the 2 I have just fine.

I am right there with you. My two G&L Legacys are some of the best sounding Strat-style guitars I've ever heard. Both have swimming pool routs; none of my other Strats do.

Re: What gear do you like but others hate?

Not really "hated", but I love using 250k pots with humbuckers.

Re: What gear do you like but others hate?

I really loved the tone I got with my Bugera V22 and 333XL. Gave the V22 to a touring friend and got rid of the 333XL as it was way too powerful for me. Currently use a Hot Rod Deluxe but was looking at getting another V22 before I got the HRD (traded a MIM Strat for a MIA Tube amp, better deal IMO than buying an amp.)

I love and use 12-string guitars

I love 12 Strings! My old Guild is under major reconstruction, can't wait to get it back. Am intrigued by 12 String electrics too.

I absolutely love my gibson marauder! Although I have changed the neck humbucker, I didnt buy it with the stock one though. It came with an extremely high output Schaller Hot Stuff humbucker. It's now equipped with a 35th anniversary Jazz, great pickup!

Overall a great guitar!

Re: What gear do you like but others hate?

Squier Venus - At one point in approx. 2000 I picked up a Sunburst Venus, Black Venus and 2 Fiesta Red Jag-Stangs. The Black Venus was the only one I kept.

I recently pulled it out of the case since my Daughter is away at college and I always enjoyed playing the damn thing so much. I really like it for an inexpensive unusual guitar along the same lines as any Fender Offset Guitar; Jaguar, Jazz-Master, Jag-Stang, etcetera.

I wasn't happy with the SD APS-1/Pearly Gates Trembucker so I swapped them out for a SD Antiquity Strat/'59 Trembucker, installed a new CTS 500k Volume and added a Fender TBX Tone, and, swapped the White Vol/Tone Knobs and Selector Switch Tip to Black as I think it looks so much better with the "Tuxedo Black" Treatment. Set up with .10-.46 Strings. Sounds MUCH better with the changes.

1998 Squier Vista Series Venus

Since it`s introduction in July 1997, the Venus (co-designed by Courtney Love - wife of the late Kurt Cobain, as well as vocalist, guitarist and songwriter with Hole - and the Fender Custom Shop) has become one of Fender`s most under- rated guitars. Now defunct (since 1998), and the last Squier guitar to be built in Japan, it has become rare and sought-after worldwide.

In 1997 Fender decided that they could uplevel the image of the Squire brand by (a) bringing out a series of celebrity designed models and (b) making them of the highest quality in Japan - which was by this time on a par with anything from the USA ( cheap Squire's were being made in Indonesia by that time).

Thus was born the "Vista Series" consisting of a six and twelve string Venus model, the Jagstang and the Super-Sonic. In 1998 Fender added the inexpensive Indonesian- made Musicmaster to the line, but the quality of this model was so poor it killed the Vista Series for good, after less than two years of production.

The Squier Vista Series Venus offered:

- Quality Craftsmanship "Crafted In Japan"
- Bound Fingerboard with Fully Bound 12" Radius Fretboard and Jumbo Frets
- Discontinued ('98 only) "seafoam green"
- Tune-O-Matic Bridge with String-Through Body Design
- Versatile Sonically - with only Volume/3 Way Selector Toggle Switch

First Act SFA CE140 Lola
Red Lola with Rio Grande Genuine Texas/BBQ Set to Gibson 500k Vol/Gibson 3 Way LP Toggle/Fender TBX/Switchcraft Jack

You can snag the SFA CE140 Lola fairly cheap because of the Brand Name and build a KILLER 24.75" Scale Monster Player out of each one.

- Beveled, single cutaway body shape designed in First Act’s Studio For Artists, featuring solid balance and great high fret access

- Beautiful, solid mahagany body for rich and warm sound

- Originally had Two Alnico 5 magnet vintage-style chrome bikini-clad humbucking pickups with crisp clean sound and warm distortion...(NO PICKUPS AT CURRENT...HENCE THE PROJECT DESIGNATION)

- Mahogany set neck, rosewood fingerboard with pearloid I-line inlays

- Tilted 3+3 headstock to maximize sustain

- Strings through the body with patent pending First Act String Retainer system with low profile bridge, for maximum sustain and tonal reproduction

- Chrome diecast tuning machines for accurate tuning

- Chrome-dome volume and tone knobs with 3-way toggle, for quick and easy access to sound tweaks

If I find a guitar with a GREAT Feeling/Playing Neck, Good Fretwork, Solid Mahogany, Ash, Maple or Poplar Body, quality components and a build/fit & finish with some attention to detail...then I don't care so much about the Brand Name, Country Of Manufacture or how "cheap" it is.

Re: What gear do you like but others hate?

Based on my research during the planning phase of my current build, it would seem that very, very few people were taken with Fender's reverse Jazzmaster, the Cabronita Barocha. I've regularly seen it referred to as ugly, hideous, awful, etc.

I disagree, though I'm going with a more fun (imo) color, as well as a two pickup, non-Filter'tron, arrangement.

Solid state Amps.

Floyd rose.

Penis shrinker.

Cassette tapes.

Re: What gear do you like but others hate?

twin reverb

Ditto! I don't get the Silverface hatred. The Silverface Fender Twin was one of the most popular amps of the 70's. The comparisons to Blackfaces is laughable there is such a small delta in tone. And is is subjective to say which is better but neither are a "bad" amp. When you look at the people that have played Silverfaces - Hendrix, Page, Garcia, Steve Howe, Nugent, Jack White and the list goes on and on, none of these people have suffered because of the Silverface's tone. Add to that you could not walk into a recording studio in the 70 - 80's without a Silverface Twin staring you in your face. Most people are likely listening to a Silverface on their favorite recordings and not even knowing it.

...and add my Parker Fly to the list.

Marshall JCM 900 Dual Reverb

Gibson 57 Classic/+

I'm with you, especially on the Marshall. I really regret selling mine.

I had a '57 and '57+ set in my Epi Japan SG that sounded incredible. I had them there for around ten years, and there they would have stayed if I had not decided to sell the guitar to eliminate some redundancy in my collection.

Re: What gear do you like but others hate?

Middle pickup alone on a strat. Many don't care for it but I find it very useful for a bit more brightness without some of the ice pick the bridge pup of a strat is known for.

Re: What gear do you like but others hate?

SX Guitars. They catch so much flak, but man, one of the best Tele's I ever had was one of those bad boys. Only thing I ever did was a decent setup and swap out the pups.

Re: What gear do you like but others hate?

Squier Affinity Tele. Such a good guitar! Versatile too. I get so much flak for owning one.

I don't own these but I like em:

Kemper Profiler amps

Tom Delonge Strats.

Re: What gear do you like but others hate?

I love chorus.

For me, it's definitely small combo amps in a rock/ metal setting. There's a different vibe and sound that you get from a tube combo amp being blasted vs a big 100 watt head a 4x12. I'd take a Fender Deluxe over almost any big rig (except a Boogie).

Re: What gear do you like but others hate?

I absolutley LOVE Bugera amps! I've tried the 1990, the V22 and I own the 333xl. I just don't get how people can dislike them so much. People compliment my tone then then ask what I'm using or see it and give me and "ugh" face. I don't understand. Oh well, I love them.
