What Gibson to get?

Re: What Gibson to get?

1.) It's a Gibson, duh like best rep on the planet
- Not anymore they don't. Currently the poster child for badly run company, poor/random quality control, and over-pricing themselves right out of the market

2.) when people buy guitars, the mostly search Gibson not a brand like heritage or another "not so popular" brand so it would be easier to sell
- Players don't. Fanboys do. It will be easier to sell, but the loss on any given one is potentially greater. Again - non investment grade instruments are real expensive and get sold at sensible prices. Use the eBay completed action search and see what some actually sell for vs new prices.

3.) I have owned a high end EPI SG and I absolutely loved it, so a Gibson SG was kinda what I was looking at but for what I was spending I wanted to consider my other options.
- A lot of people love Epi 400's because they are 90% of an SQ quality, at 1/3 the price or less.

4.) I have tried real fender teles and strats and I love Teles but they don't have the same ballsy sound as a Gibson which is what I want.
- Tells? Let's don't get stupid.

5.) and like most guitar players at my age, it's kinda like a dream to get a Gibson, like from when I started playing I knew about them and wanted one but now I appreciate them even more and can actually appreciate how good they can be.
- Good reason

Also - remember: Almost ANY Gibson is going to be a well built solid guitar. Ignore the QC complaints as a reason to avoid them. They all play pretty much fine. And if you do your own fret dressing etc...very cool. Still for that kind of money there should be not a thing wrong with them. And again - tone ALWAYS varies. As I say - Two Les PAuls with consecutive serial numbers could sound night & day apart. Always play first or be willing to return it.

You could buy an ESP USA Viper for ~$800 new that would be perfect. So all of that said - I can't hate on a '61 reissue. Find yourself one and go for it! As said - that SG wouldn't be hard to get rid of for most of your money if you did not dig it.

My Green Tele with the Dimarzio Super Distortion has as much balls as any Gibson style guitar I have played.

The Super Distortion is an amazing pickup. I just put one in my LP....should have done it right off the bat.

Re: What Gibson to get?

Very few good Gibsons get to Australia. And if the Americans say "play a whole bunch to find a good one", there's very little chance of finding a good one downunder.

Hamers are the guitars that Gibson wished they could make but couldn't. I wanted a LP a few years ago. I bought a Hamer.

Anyone who wants a Gibson should buy a Hamer.

I'll have a look at them, I am looking for the Gibson brand but I'll have a look, are they expensive?

Basically the same price as Gibson. BUT ... you'd never buy a s/h Gibson without having it in your hands first .... Hamer .... you can buy a used one from the USA without having to worry.

It takes a lot of guts to step away from the supposed 'mojo' of having the G word on the headstock, but once you can get away from that crap, you will find superior instruments for the same or less money. When I stated looking around for a LP, I was stunned by how mediocre the Gibsons in Aussie music stores are. IF one or two nice ones make their way down here, you can bet they get snapped up by the guys who work in the stores and they never even get hung up in the shop for the public to see.

Hamer always used Honduran mahogany. Gibson doesn't. Hamers have one-piece bodies. Gibson doesn't.

I bet you buy a Gibson because it says Gibson on the end. That's what most people do. And most of them are actually playing sub-standard instruments that certainly aren't worth the money they sell for in Australia.

That is why I'm buying a Gibson, because it's a Gibson. A lot of people are talking about other brands though so I might start looking into different brands, thanks for the heads up [emoji1360] I'm still pretty keen on a Gibson SG tho

Honestly, when you really get down to it, it's just a name on the headstock. That meant something back before the '60s and a brief period in the '90s, but now... You can find very similar guitars for the same amount of money OR LESS that will have fantastic quality, look great, and give you THAT sound.

That's one reason I suggested the Edwards guitars above. They're the same guitars made by ESP without Gibson on the headstock.

I'd also look at Japanese made Burny and Tokai guitars.

Re: What Gibson to get?

Try to get a chance to play ALL of the guitars you're considering. I've owned a LP Standard for over 15 years and just recently figured out that I just don't care for playing it standing. That would probably explain why I've never been comfortable with it outside of writing, recording, or as a backup. If I'd have known I wasn't going to end up playing it so much, I'd have probably bought a LP Studio to save some money.

That aside my Explorer, SG, and 335 are all quite comfy to play either sitting or standing.

Heh, that's funny, my LP is probably the most comfortable guitar I've ever owned in respects to playing standing up. My buddy's SG is the worst.

Re: What Gibson to get?

This kid is dead set on Gibson, no matter what other people (with years of experience playing and owning Gibsons) say.

You don't want to look like your grandpa in the 60s kiddo. I would buy an FGN if I were you. It's not very popular but made by Fujigen, the same company that makes Ibanez and Fender Japan, for a lot less money. I particularly like this one:

Re: What Gibson to get?

The kid has a dream. He's always wanted a Gibson. Let him live his dream for a while, and when he wakes up, we can meet him on the other side.
In the meantime, his money will go to support a music store that carries other guitars for the rest of us.

Re: What Gibson to get?

I'd imagine this is common: If you want a Gibson, then only a Gibson will do. It would suck to get something else if your heart is set on a Gibson. If you like an SG, by all means, figure out a way to get an SG. Go to used guitar shops. Buy from a dealer with a good return policy. Do what you can to make your dreams come true, I say.

Re: What Gibson to get?

I was in the same position once with V's. I thought my first V should be a Gibson. It was a fine guitar, but it didn't suit my needs as well as the LTD DV8R I played it against. Years later I've come around to realizing how great that LTD was. But I wish I had both. My advice? Buy guitars. Whatever you feel like you can't live without. If there are lessons to be learned, no one but you can really make you learn them. Just like Sucker Punch.

Omg I was just looking at an Edwards les Paul!!!!!! Are they good? The sound is a little bit brighter than a real Gibson and doesn't have the same lows from a few comparisons I heard but they look amazing!!! I was looking at a relic one, worth the buy?

Re: What Gibson to get?

Does anyone have an experience with Edwards guitars??? I have found a E-LP 130LTS/RE I really like the look of, it's a factory relic les Paul that looks stunning! Anyone have any experience on what they're like? Apparently they are as good as a standard Gibson?
