What guitar do I want...?

OK, so after just under 23 years I have decided too leave the RAF. On the day I finish I will get a rather nice lump sum of cash. Some of that cash is destined for things, and some of it is to be saved for the time being.

However, I'm setting aside £1000 to buy myself a guitar as a 'leaving gift' to celebrate my RAF time...

So, what do I want??

I play firmly in the classic rock area of life, and enjoy music from Pink Floyd & Clapton, Queen & The Darkness, Muse & Fleetwood Mac and any number of points in between.

I want it to be something a bit special, but it will need to be something I'll use a lot. It'll go through into my JTM45 reissue, into a 2x12 cab with G12M/G12H30 speakers with some pedals to taste when required...

Some of the guitars I've been looking at are Fender Clapton Strat, Fender Deluxe Strat, PRS McCarty, PRS S2 Starla & Mira, Musicman Silhouette & Gibson SG's (both Classic & Standard).

Most of those guitars would have to be bought secondhand due to the crazy UK prices.

I currently have a G&L Legacy with Ant Surfers, a Fret King Esprit V with C/59 & Jazz, and a homebuilt Tele with Broadcaster & Fralin Blues Special.

I'm interested to hear your thoughts...

Re: What guitar do I want...?

Why dont you buy a semi decent ibanez/fender and get someone to airbrush some RAF style graphics on it?

I'm a big fan of the Musicman Silhouette guitars. I'd go with one of those.

Re: What guitar do I want...?

What era of Clapton do you prefer to play?

If you are buying an EC Strat buy an older one, with the lace sensors. The newer ones with the noiseless pickup sound lifeless to me. The LS pickups just sound better. Another option for great versatility would be a 335 awesome overall sounding guitar especially through a Marshall

Well, the guitars you have cover the Gibson/Fender spheres; though if you were determined on an SG, I'd second the good doctor's post above. So, I'd be inclined to look at PRS or MM.

Re: What guitar do I want...?

If you don't have P90 guitar, SG Classic! That SG Custom Jerry posted would be a darn good choice also.

A mate has one of the older EC Strats. Really nice, and quite versatile.

Re: What guitar do I want...?

My experience:
I have a hand-wired Wallace version of a JTM45 with a Marshall 1960BX (Celestion 25w Greenbacks) and the best sounding guitars I've used through it are my 1990's Les Paul Standard, 2000's SG and SG Classic (all stock, for now). My Casino Elitist and Gretsch 6122 sounded really good through it also, but of course, prone to feedback.

Fenders are ok through it and do well as a second stereo track when I record, but they aren't satisfying enough to be my primary go-to guitars for the JTM45/KT66 sound. The JTM45 is bass heavy and a bit too scooped sounding to me with my Fenders (I've run a '66 Strat, 1962 Reissue Strat, 2000's MIM Strat, Highway 1 Telecaster with SD Broadcaster/SD '55 Antiquity Neck)

Re: What guitar do I want...?

I'd go for a Music Man BUT I'd go for the Albert Lee HH or MM90. Try to find a slightly used one on Ebay to get a better deal... they go for around $2000 USD. They're very unique guitars that have comfortable, familiar sounds in them but they've got their own thing going on as well. They look cool and the body balances wonderfully. They do most styles pretty well and the humbuckers on the HH model are great.

Time to enrol in a guitar-building course methinks, then you can build anything you can imagine, put them in trees and take photographs (it's the circle of life, hehe). Plus it's a wonderful journey for mind and spirit.

Re: What guitar do I want...?

If you want something that will be a great compliment to your Legacy...try a Legacy Special. Same great quality and ergonomics but the Gotoh Blades have a thicker PAF-ish quality. I regularly gig with a Legacy and a Leg. Sp.

Other than that, splurge and get yourself a '59 Historic Reissue Les Paul...or a 335.

Congrats on your miltary service, and a happy retirement.

Re: What guitar do I want...?

For milestone guitars where you're treating yourself, I think of high dollar acoustics. If you don't have one, a good Martin or Taylor would fit the bill.
