What guitar do I want...?

Re: What guitar do I want...?

A Schecter RAF Spitfire if you don't mind a used one that commemorates your time in the service.

Fender Telecaster is the way to go. Why not go with the American Special model ? It has texas special pickups , 3 barrel design, and with your budget, I'm sure you'll be able to afford one.

Re: What guitar do I want...?

I think a milestone guitar should be something you've really wanted for a long time. You have mentioned Brian May's guitar a fair few times so one to consider. Something different but classy.... PRS McCarty's are killer. Now SG's. Well since time began SG's have been my favourite looking guitar and I have had a few over the years. I had a standard and it was pretty darn good but not killer, had a '61 RI and I thought that would be the one but no... I actually preferred the standard (had a couple of Epiphone's that weren't too far behind the Gibbos). Got the used GS and whilst he ain't looking as pretty he IS the SG I had been searching for! Personally if I were you I go McCarty or as Joe says, a nice acoustic as you already have a few bases covered.

When the day comes, congratulations on your long service and whilst you say you will have a nice lump sum, it won't be enough for any of you guys and gals in the services that have proudly served their country. Well done Stevie... I thank and salute you!

Cheers Don! Thanks for all of the ideas fellas, plenty of food for thought...I predict a 'guitar trial' day in my future! :D

Re: What guitar do I want...?

OK, so after just under 23 years I have decided too leave the RAF. On the day I finish I will get a rather nice lump sum of cash. Some of that cash is destined for things, and some of it is to be saved for the time being.

However, I'm setting aside £1000 to buy myself a guitar as a 'leaving gift' to celebrate my RAF time...

So, what do I want??

I play firmly in the classic rock area of life, and enjoy music from Pink Floyd & Clapton, Queen & The Darkness, Muse & Fleetwood Mac and any number of points in between.

I want it to be something a bit special, but it will need to be something I'll use a lot. It'll go through into my JTM45 reissue, into a 2x12 cab with G12M/G12H30 speakers with some pedals to taste when required...

Some of the guitars I've been looking at are Fender Clapton Strat, Fender Deluxe Strat, PRS McCarty, PRS S2 Starla & Mira, Musicman Silhouette & Gibson SG's (both Classic & Standard).

Most of those guitars would have to be bought secondhand due to the crazy UK prices.

I currently have a G&L Legacy with Ant Surfers, a Fret King Esprit V with C/59 & Jazz, and a homebuilt Tele with Broadcaster & Fralin Blues Special.

I'm interested to hear your thoughts...

since you already have a "strat" in the form of the G&L legacy, i would scratch off the strats off your list. i'd consider a PRS for a different sound and action. i'd also suggest a jazzmaster. it seems easier to play than a strat, to me.

Re: What guitar do I want...?

First off my friend, I commend you for serving your country and wish you luck with civilian life.

Based on your list of music types, it would be very easy to recommend you a Les Paul (with Whole Lotta Humbuckers) but you really need to consider one with an ABR-1 bridge because of the inherent "snap" that rings out in the instrument. You can also find SG's with one but the secret and I really feel will get you in the right zip code is the ABR-1 bridge.

Good luck and enjoy trying them all out.

Your country is lucky to have you,

~LD
