what guitar PICK do you use? Dunlop? Tortex? Ultex? JazzIII? or ??? The Ultex sharp is getting good reviews over the last few years so maybe Ill get that one for my heavy downtuned rock needs :)

I have a heavy picking style so I am thinking .73? I have been using dunlop tortex sharp 1.0 for the last 20 years and need a changeup.

what do you use?

I was a tortex .73 man for years and years then standard Fender celluloid picks in heavy or extra heavy then a few years ago I tried a Jazz III and was hooked...standard Jazz III's are what I use most of the time but lately I have been messing with Herco Flex 75's...I wish they were smaller but I do dig the tone so I use 'em now and again.

That's funny...I've followed almost the same progression, except I never jived with the Jazz III. I do love the red Jazz II, which is the same material & pick size, but the tip is a standard profile, not sharp.

On a whim I bought a bag of Herco Flex 75s just to try. I do like them, but I'm not settled on anything at this point.

A couple observations I've made:

-The .73mm Tortex sounds great for distorted tones. If I played metal or rock all the time, I'd probably stick with these.

-Clean tone of the .73mm is "thin" or "plinky" compared to Jazz II. This difference really stands out for me when playing 3 and 4 note chords on the upper strings for r&b/funk type stuff, or when playing arpeggios.

-Herco flex 75 seems kind of in between these two, but leaning much more toward the Jazz...it is after all a thick nylon pick.

For me, trying new picks has been fairly frustrating. I've tried more new picks in the past year than I had in the past 25 years.

I like the Ultex Sharps and regular Ultex picks but have been using a Ultex sharp 2.0mm as my pick of choice. I use to use the .73mm which is great for thrash and styles where speed is king but found after a while they flex too much for me and I can't dig in like I want. The 2.0mm gives me all the dynamics I need and still let me play fast when needed.

I'm not big on Jazz 3s because of their size. Sure their great for single note stuff but strumming I need a regular size pick. I find that thicker, harder picks give me a greater control on my dynamics and give better sustain when you hit the string.

Fender Extra Heavy tortoise shell picks for about 12 or 13 years, with Pick-Boy Meta Carbonite picks thrown in every now and then. Then Tortexes (blue, then purple) when I discovered them in about 2003, and nothing else since.

I've been using V-Picks' Screamer for a while. Think those are either 2mm or 3. I recently ordered from Gravity Picks. Got their Stealth pick in 3mm and Chris sent an extra 4mm Stealth!

i've been using the stiff black Jazz 3s for about five years now. i'd like to try the red ones, they'd be easier to find when i drop one. Unfirtunately, GC never has them whenever i go there.

I started buying them when I began playing because a few of my favorite artists used them. I kept using them because stiff picks aren't very good for what I want to do and these just feel like home.. they give but they're not super thin, they sound great.

I have a 12 pack of IntuneGP .60's. After playing on 2mm+ picks for so long, I feel like they'll snap. :p

Dunlop tortex and ultex 1mm. Sometimes the black Dunlop nylon 1mm's as well. I've tried the jazz picks, but never really got on with them.

I started off on a 1mm Tortex Standard and then moved to a .88 Tortex because James Hetfield used them. Then I started using a .88 Sharp because they looked evil, and then have recently started using a .73 Sharp which is perfect for me. The .88 was a little heavy and I tried one again recently, and it doesn't jive with me at all. For acoustic, I use a .50 standard Tortex, because it's really flappy and I can strum heavily and still get a decent tone for the delicate picking stuff. I won a set of those Gravity picks a few months ago, and that's what I'm using for my basses. I used to play a .88 sharp for both guitar and bass, so once I go through the Gravity picks, I'll probably go back to those.

At the minute I'm using D'Andrea 1.14mm Tortoise Shell Celluloid pics but as I'm quickly running out of those, being in 2 bands is making me wear through a lot of them, I've bought a bag of 100 Planet Waves 1.25mm Celluloid pics.

I dunno what it is about the Herco Flex 75 but they just sort of sound right to me sometimes. I have gotten used to a Jazz size pick so they feel too big most of the time but I'm finding it easier to go back and fourth lately.

I also really like the tone of plain old Fender picks but they wear out FAST for me.

Jazz IIIs are amazing. Red, black, yellow . . . it's all good. I prefer a bigger, thinner pick when strumming stuff on an acoustic though.

Put a li'l piece of White tape on 'em,looks "Ghetto" as Hell,but at least you can keep up w/ 'em!!!Did it w/some Pettrucci(sp?) picks,myself!

I have been using some custom picks from InTuneGP lately. They're Jumbo JazzIII picks in a Tortex-like material, .88mm. And of course I put my band logo and signature on them. Cause I'm that guy.
