What happened between EVH and Peavey?

Saw the recent threads on the new Wolfie and wondered what the story was when the relationship ended. Was it a money thing? Only reason was I saw the new prototype and it looks exactly like the Peavey version with a headstock scoop.

Anyone shed any light on it?

Re: What happened between EVH and Peavey?

By all accounts, EVH and Hartley Peavey both have very... strong personalities. Inevitable that there should be a disagreement somewhere along the way.

Re: What happened between EVH and Peavey?

one of the last 2004 shows VH did with Sammy Ed smashed 2 Wolfies and flipped his 5150 cabs over... reports in the media said he was upset with someone back stage that day (and Peavey was there)... i wonder if it just was his way of signaling the end of the Peavey's... on that tour Ed and His tech were putting the Peavey's down in Interviews... saying the trems were junk and they needed lots of spare parts to keep Ed's main Wolfies going...

but for sure Ed's abuse was active again in 2004.. you could see he was not in the best health

Re: What happened between EVH and Peavey?

him and peavey were not getting along. but another thing was that ed's contract with peavey ended but he owned the wolfgang design so that why he is taking it and putting it on his new EVH line (with some modifications of coarse)

Re: What happened between EVH and Peavey?

Whatever happened between Ed and [insert anyone not getting along with him here]?

Ed was a douche.

Re: What happened between EVH and Peavey?

Well around the time of contract negotiations, Ed was having personal problems. He was supposed to promote the Wolfgang Guitars and 5150 amps, and more than once he showed up to NAMM very inebriated when he was supposed to be promoting. Who knows how much more happened behind the scenes. This was also when Peavy was going to release Satriani's amp.

Quality of the guitars? Well Ed's personal guitars don't come off the shelf, they're made by a private lutheir for Peavey. I always felt the Peaveys felt cheap compared to EBMM.\

I think the Wolfgang and the new to be released wolfgangs are jsut plain ugly. Maybe they balance better, but I never liked the wolfgang design

Agreed 100%. I cannot get with the look of that thing to save my life. One of the coolest things I thought came out of the Fender/Charvel association was getting to see Ed playing Strat bodies again...:cool2:

Personally I think all of the EVH designed guitars were butt ugly.

Re: What happened between EVH and Peavey?

its just business between a eccentric artist and a company.
Yeah it makes me sick but what can you do? You just cant believe all the crap you hear from the get go.
I mean if you look back at every endorsment deal that EVH did he always says something to the point of " This is the best!" or " Finally someone got it right" and then some years down the line he dogs the same product.
So whoever gets stuck with that product feels like an idiot. Too bad for us that we dont get these products made by private luthiers and dont pay for them.

So its all baloney.
I felt that way when he got together with Fender and was saying all this hooey about how they finally got it right and blah blah blah. I was watching that saying " yeah till you get pissed about soemthing and totally change your mind."

thats why i cant stand most 'artist' products. Its just so geared towards 'kids' and their 'heroes'

I agree as well on getting him back to using Strat shaped bodies though. They just look more sleek and made for 'hot' playing.

His tech Matt Bruck, the guy who writes the column for Guitar World? His advice sucks. Most of his replies are total stock, bs answers.... the type we all roll our eyes at and try to dispel.

If the trems were failing, it's probably because neither of them knows how to set one up or maintain it properly.

I read an interview with EVH about his "luthier" work, like chopping holes in his guitars with hammers to make things fit. If he tried to make a living in music shop working on guitars, he'd have been put in jail years ago. The guy should never be allowed in the same room as a tool. And he's also the one responsible for the fact that he has zero credibility with his endorsments. Burn the companies that support you! Good plan.

well in an interview he said that he used to have to mod his guitars himself to make them work the way that HE wanted them too because no one made stuff that he wanted, so he would have to make it himself. i agree that some of his methods were a bit "out there" but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to get what YOU want.

He did it cause he was a poor slob at the time. he could have found a good guitar tech in LA to do just about wahtever he wanted and probably for not that much money. Probably he is a tightwad too. Oh well..look, it paid off. You'd have to say he did the right thing.

Yngwie may be an exception. He has endorsed Dimarzio for years, and still swears by them, Marshalls and his Fender sig model, which is largely unchanged in years. Have to give him credit....

Re: What happened between EVH and Peavey?

I actually like the EBMM EVH model and the way it looks. I bought one myself, (though it's the AXIS) and like the cross between a Tele and Les Paul. EVH didn't design the body though, EBMM already had the design when he came on board, it was actually supposed to be another Albert Lee model, but they kept it for EVH- but digitized his neck, custom designed pickups, etc... It's still a fine guitar. (sorry for being defensive, but it is a great guitar).

The Peavey was a more comfortable guitar due to the arch top- which meant the neck had to be angled- which created a more comfortable playing position like a Les Paul. But the shape of the body? Not for me.
