OK, I think I've always been a fan of the Mesa tone more than marshall and after seeing some of their prices I think I might get one. Help me figure out what I want, Please!

tones I like:

Big Wrecks CD "Ode to the dearly departed" - I think that is the name, but I'm not sure - It has "That Song" and "The Olf" on it.

Third Eye Blind - first record in particular, referenceing songs like "Loosing a Whole year" and "Narcapsley"(spelling) as well as "Good for You"

"Seeing Red" by Unwritten Law

Deftones tones off of "White pony"

Tool anema tones

Pretty much all of Collective Soul's tones (though they probably use alot of different amps)

I like alot of tones. But mostly, I'd like to get a good solid amp that I will provide a cool texture power chord as well as some killer riff tones

Mostly, though, I'm looking for the big wreck tones.

Also,

MIA strat, C-5 bridge, Jb jr middle, ,lil 59 neck

4 x 12 cab with two governors and two speakers that are not connected. 8ohms, 150 watts.

a les paul is probably next (after all I graduate next year :22: :13: )

One of the Rectifier series amps should make you happy. I have a Rectoverb and I love it. I don't use it for the same tones that you are trying to get, so that should tell you something about its versatility. It's got a ton of bass, I literally set my bass to zero, and that's with a strat.

If you want a cheap answer to the Mesa Boogie and are willing to look for it, find a Fender 75. It was Fender's answer to the Boogie, at least according to Mike Soldano. They're not really in demand and you should be able to pick one up for not a lot of coin.

+1, the Rectoverb is a great amp. And at 50 watts, it's useable in a variety of allowable volume situations.

Single or Dual recto would be good. Collective Soul used 5150's for some of their stuff, so that might be another amp to look into.

Single or Dual Recto would be god. Also, Coolective Soul used 5150's for some of their stuff, so you might want to look into those as well.

Say I get a single recto or a 50 watt rectoverb, I would probably need a hotplate to get heavy gain at apartment level, right?

I was leaning toward the F-50 or 100 because of the great reviews it has been getting on it's clean channel. How are the recto's cleans?

Even with a hotplate it would probably be too loud - you need to get the speaker working and on maximum attenuation that just doesn't seem to happen (so I've found anyway).

I have an F-50 and I really like it. I found the gain channel needed a bit of weaking and sometimes it can sound overly buzzy but it can produce some pretty heavy tones, especially when it's cranked a bit. The clean channel though is amazing. I was thinking of selling mine and getting a more marshall-like amp but then I just kept coming back to that channel...sigh...

+1 for a rectifier. you can do almost anything with these amps to begin with, and the option of using EL34's allows you to do even more. keeping in mind the option of EL34's, i'm convinced that you can get almost any tones out of this amp that you can even think of dialing in.

Think about some other boogies if you want to save some coin. I have a nomad that was $599 brand new because Guitar Center was not going to carry the 55 watters anymore. They're fairly affordabale used as well. A little more traditional than the recto's, but killer tones. Probably the best boogie clean I've heard.
Also look into the Studio 22's or the Subway series if you want less volume. Being powered by 2 el84's they stick in the 20-30 watt range.

Do any of you guys know where I can find a cheaper Mesa Amp. I would love to play $1300 but sadly I dont have that cash off hand!

Another Mesa amp that is fairly affordable is the discontinued 50 Caliber Plus (or the non-plus). You can find them for around $500. It's like a simple Mark IV and I believe the F series are Mesa's current answer to them. I have a Dual Rec head and I was very pleased with the tones when I played the 50 Caliber. Great Amp!!

Funny you say that, I was looking to have my marshall modded and I listened to both the marshall and the mesa tones on the Voodoo page and I thought, "that's what I want" when I heard the mesa. So, I'm opting to get a mesa, mabey a mod in the future.

Also, thanks, I'm thinking about a tremoverb, or a single or mabey a dual, now. I still may go with an F-50.

On a side note does anyone work at a music store? I'm wondering if it's possible to trade my TSL in on a Mesa and how much I could get for it (perfect condition, no scars or scuffs, original footpedal, manual and footpedal box)? Fell free to pm or post. I've already emailed the nearest mesa dealer some questions (almost 200 miles away :smack: )

Ok, three post in a row, BUT -

I've pretty much narrowed it down to either the F-50 ($999.00 US) or the 50 watt rectoverb "series II" ($1299.00 US). OR mabey the Single recto ($1149.00 US).

Hopefully I'll be able to play all three (without ear fatigue) and come up with something. However, I'm still up for comments.

I have an F50 and love it, though I think I'm gonna have to sell. Too loud (not spamming BTW, jes mentioning it).

I spent alot of time the other day with a Stilletto and a Dual rec both through rec 4x12 cabinets.

The Stilletto was ...hmmm...hit or miss for me. Not MESA's best effort though I was able to get some decent tones with some fiddling.

The more I play a dual rec, the more impressed I become, and the more I think the amp gets bashed undeservedly.

I don't care for the "modern' voicing (scoopy, buzzy nu-metal tones or Metallica on Steroids if ya pump the mids a bit) but the Raw and Vintage High Gain voicings go from vintage Mark & plexi/vox-esque to modded Marshall and MKIIc/MKII type tones. I was really really impressed and was able to dial in some GREAT sounds. Had I the coin, I woulda plunked down the $2300 for head and cab right there and then...even it would be too loud as well. The cool thing about it was you can dial up the MV to get those 6L6's hummin' a bit and then lower the output control to get better sounds at low volumes. It's not the same as crankin it, but still a neat feature.

And the Voodoo mod makes 'em even better.Those soundclips are super sweet. Jes be warned that according to the website they don't mod recto/tremoverbs . I think jes the dual/triples.

New option I was thinking of either:

1) Get a 50 Watt Tremoverb

or

2) Get a single Recto and a Fender verb tank

#2 is actually cheaper.

I'm pretty sure Voodoo Amps mods the rectoverbs, but definitely not the Tremoverbs due to some problems that are stock.
