What is a True Bypass?

TB is good to a degree, but too many in an unbuffered chain and you've got nothin' but trouble.

I think every time someone extols the virtues of true bypass, they should be required to discuss the benefits of buffers.

Re: What is a True Bypass?

Keeps the signal through alot cable, while the other dies at 5 meters, kills off most of the signal, but it is a tired subject, and people do what they want to anyways;)
So I am not even going to say much more:D

I wasn't implying that you have to say something about buffers, Niels. Sorry if it came across that way.

I agree with this :beerchug:

I like true bypass, but for long signal runs, you really need a buffer of some kind somewhere in the setup (most folks I know who only use one or two buffered effects throw them towards the end of the chain). All buffers effect your tone in some way, none can be fully transparent, but some are certainly better than others.

Rid may be very right about harping on buffered pedals and some very intelligent folks like Pete Cornish agree, but I get a "direct to amp" sound through 8 pedals (give or take a few depending on the moment), so that's leading me to believe that true bypass pedals are a good thing. I guess with buffered, you really have to play around with your signal chain and really test each pedal vigorously to determine what attributes each pedal is adding to your chain and modify accordingly. That seems like a pretty daunting task for the average musician, but I'm sure that's how some folks get some amazing results from some not so amazing gear.

xicodelico,
Dude, you are like so obviously new on this forum, that is exactly the type of amature question that gets aleclee blood pressure through the skull, I mean there are people here who played the amps of known guitarists, from bands that are on MTV, ok??? :-)))

Re: What is a True Bypass?

True bypass is a very good thing, If it weren't, you wouldn't see all the high dollar boutique pedal makers using it. It's a bit of a pain in the arse to wire the switches properly, so the effort is worth the payoff.

But, true bypass is really only a benefit if you intend to play with the pedal OFF for a good bit of your set. If it's something like a compressor or overdrive that you keep on all the time, then you're never bypassing it! I see guys who use inexpensive compressors first in their rigs, which stay on all the time. These are followed by big money fuzzes and such that they switch in and out. Their sonic results are amazing!

Tell that to CAE and Cornish;)
Neither uses TB!!!
There is not much good in TB from my side either, nothing but signal loss in the long run.
