What is all the hype about the rockman?

The headphone amps were pretty limited in controls but I think most of the bands that used them tended to record with the rack gear.

I had the rack gear, it was more flexible but still had that Boston DNA and it is hard to push it out of the realm of classic/hard rock.

Well at that time Tom made that stuff it was "mainstream rock" & not "classic rock".
Is the Scholz DNA for everyone ? Maybe not but Scholz R & D certainly has guilded itself in modern rock guitar history.

Back when it was still sold new it sounded substantially better than the competition, I went through a couple of them at Amptown in Hamburg. Bought the X100, still have it.

Yes, back then, headphone amps weren't a thing, and modeling was just a dream. There were not very good solutions to silent practice.
