What is the Mount Rushmore of guitar amps?

Re: What is the Mount Rushmore of guitar amps?

Marshall JTM45/100 - Hendrix
Supro Thunderbolt - Page
Fender Champ - Clapton
Fender Tweed Deluxe/Vox AC30 - Beck

The champ is very small. You get to pick an extra one.

it's probably the biggest amp of the bunch...not only Clapton/Allman on Layla but Walsh, Gibbons, Beck... used this gigantic tone machine...

I was being literal. While great, the Champ IS small.

Re: What is the Mount Rushmore of guitar amps?

1959SLP
2203
SLO
Recto

In terms of great albums/stages that have been graced with them, the SLO could arguably be replaced with the 5150, but I picked the SLO instead because of its influence/importance. Part of me also wants to find a way to squeeze on a Mark IIC+ or a Mark IV, but despite how revolutionary the Mark series design is, it's hasn't ever been as widely used as the Plexi, 2203, Recto, 5150, etc., and I can't think of anything that really followed in its footsteps with the combination of pre-gain and post-gain tone stacks.

Intresting that the amp that most of us agree on so far is the Vox AC 30.

When I first got a modeling amp and played with all the built in options the Vox was my immediate favourite. Something distinctive about them, I assume being class A is part of it.

Re: What is the Mount Rushmore of guitar amps?

I always leaned toward the twin models
In fact I judge all modelers on how well they do Fender Twins

Marshall sims are just a bit more mid present

I have had several modeling amps and pedals
They are great for previewing amps for beginners
And mixing in different textures for recording

They can be a bit bland live

Modeling a Twin is hard, a lot of the tone comes from the speakers. Especially that snappiness in the speaker response that is often confused with brightness. Plug a Fender Twin into a closed back Brittish style cab and you have a totally different animal.

Re: What is the Mount Rushmore of guitar amps?

I've heard nothing but great things about those. I'll probably need to pay for a divorce lawyer before getting one though, so I'm saving up.
This was my primary clean chorus when I was in my Rush phase... Hard to beat depth snd sparkle other than Jc120

I was actually kidding about the Lab Series. A horrible sounding amplifier, at best. You can get some decent cleans, but that's about it.

B. B. King always seemed to get a great tone out of his Lab Series, and a lot of the fusion and jazz guys like Allen Holdsworth used them back in the days. They are beautiful amps in the right hands. I think they are far from horrible.

I've read the Lab was the first great SS amp. Then again, I've read a lot of things on the internet and I'm starting to get suspicious.

Actually if I were to do a Mount Rushmore of solid state amps it would be

LabSeries L5
Roland JC120
Peavey Bandit
ZT Lunchbox

Orange CR120?

No doubt man, also the Marshall VS100 or the Randell Orange Stripes. There are plenty of great solid state amps out there.

If we talk solid state, we need to put at least one of the more jazz centric ones like the Polytone, Henriksen or Evans. Even Quilter.

Shoot my Laney GC80A is a solid state tone monster
Of course it's not as well known as the Bandit and Roland
