Re: What Is Your Favorite Budget Pickup Brand?

Get a used set of mexican fender on ebay for $30. Remove th ceramic magnets and replace the slugs with alnico V rods.

The get a GFS steel tremolo block. Best thing you cam do for your tone.

Finally, get some gun lubricant for the nut. In tune guitars sound better!

Boom?..huge upgrades under 75 for all!

Re: What Is Your Favorite Budget Pickup Brand?

I agree used Duncans are the finest pickups for someone on a budget, but I'm trying to keep it from "seeming" like a good guitar. As students they'll see a name other than DMZ or SD and think "oh they must be crap, if I had Duncans I'd sound like _______". Whereas someone better could pick it up and make it sound like fire.

That's the best part about learning guitar, you can always blame your bad tone on your amp and pickups. If you start out on a professional level guitar with a world class amp, you'll notice you're the reason you sound bad. Does that make sense?

Re: What Is Your Favorite Budget Pickup Brand?

My vote would go for used Duncans also. Have heard consistently good comments about Tonerider. And some of the GFS are actually pretty good. I've been happy with a set of Surf90s, the A2 Strat set is quite good, and my VEH bridge isn't bad either.

FWIW, GFS is running a big Labor Day weekend sale right now.

I have one set of Wilkinson PAFs that sound good enough that they're still in the guitar two years after I'd expected to switch 'em out. And the Kent Armstrong noiseless Stealth P90s are pretty good too: very quiet, though a tad polite.

For less expensive Strat pickups it would be hard to beat a set of " duncan designed " out of Squires VM Strat.
That's what I'm running in mine and they sound Great!
