What is your perfect neck?

Re: What is your perfect neck?

Good to know. I was wondering how are the necks of these (I never touched a BC Rich).
Being mahogany guitars, how they do compare to Gibsons ? (I am asking for Mockingbirds.)

I was extremely impressed with their lowest end guitars' "Fit and Finish" and playability -astonished really -the neck feel and fret finish were masterful. -I haven't done any research to know who in China/Malaysia/Korea is building their stuff -but it is clearly to the standards we are seeing from other brands that are succeeding overseas like Gretsch, Guild, Schecter etc.

I used to produce a lot of bands that used BC Riches (in the Shoegaze, Doom, Sludge, Triumph Metal department) , they always sounded great, and can make aggressive tones and trem moves out of the box that Gibson typically cannot (without changes) but personally have never owned or desired to own one until last weekend playing a 300 dollar one -I might consider trying some others models for giggles.

I was nothing but stoked on ripping out some fretboard burners on that Mockingbird.

This one looks nice IMO:

Is it MIK ?

I would say they compare fairly well to Gibson, probably somewhere between an explorer an SG, maybe like a Firebird. But I cant say for certain as the Mockingbird I have has a Floyd on it, which changes things a bit. The one you linked to is one of the top of the Korean line, it has the same neck specs as mine, a medium thickness similar to a Gibson 60s profile, 12" radius ebony fretboard, and 24 5/8" scale.

Thanks for the info on the Mockingbirds. Sounds like cool guitars. Maybe the one you mentioned was produced by World Musical Instrument in Korea (?) They make the Gretsch Electromatic series, the PRS SE, EPS/LTD and also guitars for BC Rich, Chapman, Dean, Schecter...
I have a PRS baritone 277 Semi Hollow Soapbar made there and love its sound.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

Maybe it's a recent change, but I checked their website again: They do now make almost the exact guitar I wanted to buy before, but with a new model name: https://www.bcrich.com/mk11

Believe this replaced the 'NJ' Mockingbird? That said, the new one appears to be out of stock anywhere on the internet.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

I've been playing razor thin Wizard necks since I was in high school. I just can't do these thick C or V shaped necks. I've tried, but just can't do it.

I'm pretty sure Neal Moser still sells the preamps for those if you want to get even closer to an original BCR.

That's pretty much the same as the one I have, it's an STQ model from about five years ago, but mine has an ebony fretboard instead of rosewood, and Duncan Designed pickups in it.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

Something about the setup on all new BC Rich guitars I've played is *very* impressive. I wanted one of their cheaper line through-neck Mockingbirds, then they apparently discontinued them.

I've got an ST model from around 10yrs ago, which cost me about £350. I play it alongside my afore mentioned LP Std, without any real noticeable comfort change in the neck profile.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

Warmoth roasted Maple tele necks (even on strats) with a reverse headstock, rosewood fretboard or something more exotic, stainless steel frets, I prefer thin necks but have thick necks also.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

Whatever Charvel calls the profile on my Wildcard #6 Dreamsicle. Friggin thing plays like butter.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

I was watching Paul Reed Smith on YouTube last night
Talking about neck shapes

It seems the one he had on screen was righthanded
And was asymmetrical
With the thicker part towards the high E

Which sounds backwards to me

Did I misunderstand
Is this how asymmetrical necks are supposed to be?

I've never played one

Re: What is your perfect neck?

That doesn't sound ideal for me. It's a minor dislike but I don't like the shoulder to have much ability to contact my palm.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

I have an old PRS standard. I don't know if the neck shape is asymmetrical or not, and it is different from all my other guitars, but it plays very fast and clean without effort. It seems a little fatter than other guitars when I first pick it up, but it is not fatiguing on my hands and wrist at all.

Actually my pre production Charvel has a slightly fatter neck than most production Charvels but that neck feels and plays the best I have ever played.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

That's sounds petty good! for bolt on necks I've come to like 2 Graphtech string trees, 1 over the d&g and 1 over the b&e like the Yamaha Variax. And a tusq nut.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

I would likely to slightly revise my initial response, since then I've become more inclined to prefer 4×2 headstocks rather than inline 6. With staggered tuners you need neither a string retainer nor an angled headstock and the strings are perfectly straight into the nut. It also stops one side of the headstock from becoming cluttered up.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

Since this thread is back to life, Ill chime in. Charvel necks are my favorite. I love the compound radius, the thin necks and not to wide fret boards. Also love the 60s profile Gibson shape. Ive always wanted a Jackson soloist, but the boards are just alittle too wide for my comfort.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

I really like the neck on my Charvel for playing lead. The big frets mean that you can play with a much softer touch, the fretboard edges are nicely rolled, the compound radius makes playing up high on the neck very comfortable. Thinner necks are a bit less comfy for playing rhythm though. I prefer my Epi Dot's big boat neck for that.

I really, really like big frets on a guitar, it just makes it easier to get the guitar to do what I want. Stainless steel frets are better than regular frets. Nut width is important too, 1-5/8" necks are playable but uncomfortable to me while 1-11/16" or 1-3/4" are perfect. Neck thickness doesn't matter too much at all, I'm comfy on thick and skinny necks.

Re: What is your perfect neck?

My fav neck is the Peavey Wolfgang / Musicman Axis profile. I have smaller hands so it fits me to a tee - 1 5/8 nut, assymmetrical, decent thickness with worn-down shoulders. Probably my main thing is the oiled neck though.

My 2nd fav which I've only just realized is the more 50's rounded Gibson, which is odd considering my hand size. When it's satin finished it just feels like a meatier, symmetric Wolfgang. A great neck I tried recently was on a satin PRS S2; very similar to the rounded except with an ever-so-slight V, so less shoulders.
