That Muff sounds like crap for 80's. The only thing even half decent was the guy with the Telecaster! And even there he had to dial it in carefully.

I am straight out of the 80's, I have a Metal Muff. I don't use it. Think about it.

It might not be 100% 80's, but i get a very decent Black Crowes type of tone from a Metal Muff with the gain almost at a minimum.

So, if you can get that kind of tone, that is a whole bunch of notched lower than late 80's metal gain, the i am sure 80's metal is in there somewhere too

For 80s Rock/Metal I tend to just use my amps drive, sometimes with a boost (on 1 amp) or an EP style preamp (on other amp), but if I do use a pedal as main source of drive then I quite like the TRex Tonebug Distortion.

Well, i just assumed you had the 80's go-to metal amp (a Marshall of some sorts) already.

Well I've sorta gone away from amps and mainly use processors. I had a Mesa Boogie DC-5 with JJ tubes that I ran a Maxon tube screamer through that was my favorite gain sound I've ever had...but it was way too loud for my house and I went directly out of my POD for the Church services I played in.

the metal muff is way to in your face for the 80s metal stuff. yeah you could probably get away with using one, but it wouldn't be my first choice. or even in my top 10 choices.

I will dare say you guys are way over analysis the 80's tone. Guys in the 80's were more apt to buy "labels" than cork sniff. Eddie played Kramer, everyone had to have a Kramer. Randy had a MXR Dist+ and a Jackson, the fanboys would run out and get both. Every clown had a JMC800. Guys in the 80s put more thought into what hairspray they were using than what gear they were playing.

I would say the DC-5 would have been borderline too loud for the auditorium and the sound guy didn't like amps on the stage so we all used processors. I really miss the DC-5...I think its a highly under rated amp–the 5 way EQ really made the amp versatile in my opinion. But I really just use an amp for practicing. I have a Marshall MG 50 that sounds great for a solid state amp (and awesome seeing as I only paid $100 for it) that is great for practice.

IDK I was pretty serious in the 80s never used any hairspray , and only in promo shots did any of the dozen bands I hung around with use it. The term hair band is stupid and not a true representation of what was just straight rock and roll of the time.

Haha! I don't play there anymore...lol that Church got a new music Pastor who really changed things up and ended losing around 80% of the musicians and singers.

Yeah, I got kicked out because I couldn't go to every practice--I worked for a CPA firm and could only make it to 2 out of the 4 rehearsals a week...which most people I talk to think any more than 2 practices a week for Church is way overboard...

Anywho, glad that chapter of my life is over and I don't have to deal with that anymore. Lol

80s rock/metal tones really aren't that hard to cover with a pedal. I usually use an OCD type pedal for that now as my amps are set up a little thicker.

Everyone was using ADA MP-1 preamps in the late 80's... the early 80's was a different type of gear... and the mid 80's was yet another.

Early was Marshall 800's turned up + Hot pickups

Mid was about Marshall + Rat pedals etc…

Late was modded Soldano's and whatnot or preamps + Lexicon or SP90's

I agree with Ace, I had a Marshall Silver Anniversary jcm 800 half stack and a Gibson Explorer that sounded great together. At lower volumes I used a boss overdrive to give it a little extra edge. At higher volumes I just played it straight up put the tone at around 7 and it sounded punchy and righteous. It was however at that point-peel the paint off the walls loud-to get that tone. everyone also used a boss chorus or delay. some used flange but most didnt. Reverb pedals again most were boss becouse they were everywhere. A lot of people used Roland Jazz Chorus for cleans but there were also alot of used Fender twins and super reverbs from the 70's floating around. Yamaha made a rack mount effect processor that no one could afford but everyone wanted to have cuz it was considered cool, cant remember what it was called......somthing like the yamaha 1000? cant remember now but ya I had all my stuff by 1984 and it was all Van Halen, Judist Priest, Scorpions, Def Leppard, Quiet Riot, Ozzy....ext. you could get those tones right from your Marshall. You could plug right into the the head and get Krokus's Midnight Maniac sound or Judis Priests livin after midnight tone. It was kinda .......Presto just add Marshall to get a gig

It all depends.. Do you want what they actually used or what is the best nowadays?

The MI Audio Crunchbox will get in the ballpark. The Carl Martin Plexitone is what I use a lot for that kinda tone. It does everything from AC/DC to heavy high gain Marshall sounds. Get the 2 channel version with boost. Its more raw sounding. The Wampler Pinnacle does the Van Halen thing, though I prefer the Plextortion. Its a bit more allround imo. Distortion+ is cool too, if you are in to that kind of sound The Suhr Riot is cool as well, but its a bit more modern sounding imo.
