what pedal is good for pushing gain channel even more?

I need a pedal to push my gain channel on my genz even further for leads and such.

what would you suggest.

Re: what pedal is good for pushing gain channel even more?

I guess any overdrive pedal could work, just try a bunch a local store to see which ones you like the best. Another good pedal for pushing the gain is the boss ds-1 with the gain low and the output level on high.

I favor the Boss BD-2 for this kinda stuff. It doesent add much, just fills out the sound more.

Re: what pedal is good for pushing gain channel even more?

I'm a fan of the Tubescreamer type pedals. They push the front end of an amp without getting muddy.

Re: what pedal is good for pushing gain channel even more?

I think it depends on what you like for tones. But, I like to use an SD-1 with my El Diablo 60c on the lead to step it up a notch further when coping the never ending sustain thing. I use it as a clean-ish boost.

Arion Tubulator.......You know I had to say it.

Re: what pedal is good for pushing gain channel even more?

This is going to depend on how much gain you have already from the amp and how much more you're wanting. Some amps provide so much that adding an OD or distortion pedal out front only produces mud.

From your sig I see you have an El Diablo. IIRC, those have quite a bit of gain on tap. You shouldn't need a pedal to get more, unless you dial the gain on the amp back to allow for more without turning to mud.

the SD1 sucks in stock form... going to mod it soon, with pointers from erikH's page

Re: what pedal is good for pushing gain channel even more?

For pushing an already driven amp I preer either my Duncan Pickup booster or if I want to add a touch of gain from the pedal I use my Banzai Cold Fusion...FWIW, I use the Banzai more than the Pickup booster.

If the new Electro Harmonix LBP-1 is any good, try one. Just gain, no tone boost. The MXR Micro Amp does sort of the same thing.

I prefer a clean boost, but sometimes use a cheap Graphic EQ for a mid boost.

I can't believe EH reissued that thing. It's so simple that pretty much anyone who knows how to use a soldering iron can build one. At least the street price is good, $40 for a simple booster, that's not a bad deal.

ibanez smash box

stock form

turned my laney into a ****ing mesa boogie :headbang:

had the eq scooped for a while and it NAILS the metallica black tone.
then i wanted more mids and dimed the mids too.. so my eq is at 10 and the tightness and tone are ridiculous!! (i turned the gain on the amp, down to 3 - it is barely distorting when without the pedal)
had it at volume, that would suffice for small-ish gigs too lol.

now i'm moding the SD1, but need some caps, which i'll buy tomorrow, so i'll give you the rundown on that soon.

why would you do that!

thanks guys, im going to try some of these out later, just so you know, i have the gain on my genz prety high, but the tube knob is low, so it gives a deep gringy mesa-type tone, if i turn the tube up then it alters to a peavy/marshall tone. its kinda hard to describe. I think for this reason a ts9 will be be as it is a treble boost also.

who wouldnt want a mark series distortion tone, for playing heavy metal?

rarely anybody.. and if they do, they already got some booteek stuff ;)

but like i said.. put the amp into slight overdrive.. just so it's breaking up, then hit it with an OD and send it into meltdown.

Actually that is exactly how I use mine - I have the distortion all the way off and it boosts the gain just enough to bring a solo out front.

The gain on them is pretty interesting, and it is my favorite amp. But I have found a touch of a push on the gain channel creates another very musical lead tone at times. Odd but true for me. Almost violin or sax like a times.
