What pedals for my rig?

Re: What pedals for my rig?

For funk wah, I would suggest a VOX Clyde McCoy. It has a brighter tone than my Crybabys, and is perfect for doing "Shaft" type rhythms.

Your choice for a phasor will probably come down to MXR vs. Boss...Phase 95 vs. the PH-3. Both are good versatile units.

You could do something like the Dunlop Echoplex preamp for a booster but it does slightly color your sound. I prefer something more pure, like my ancient DOD FX-10 Preamp, or the BBE Boosta Grande.

You don't mention chorus, but I will tell you I prefer DOD/Digitech over Boss. The Hardwire Chorus is very good, as are the Boss CE-2 Waza and the Dimension C.

Distortion and delays are the tricky part, and I might suggest as many as three, even four, units each...seriously! To start, a Soul Food is great for boosting as well as light overdrive tones. Next might be something to give you Marshall crunch. There are so many MIAB pedals, I wouldn't know where to start. Then, I'd want something to get my soaring Santana-esque Boogie leads, so I would look at the Mesa Flux-Drive rather than the Throttle Box. And you need a psychedelic fuzz box so go grab a E-H Satisfaction fuzz. It's bright and grindy and nails those late '60s tones. And it is CHEAP!

Most of the players I know are using multiple delays...a digital, like ubiquitous DD-3,5,6,7 and then an analog like the Carbon Copy or the DM-2 Waza. The new Carbon Copy Deluxe is getting rave reviews and paired with a DD-20 or DD-500 would be really impressive. Then add the EP clone of your choice. For just one pedal, or on a budget, hunt down a Line 6 Echo Park. Lots of power in that unit, but it weighs a lot for as small as it is.

These are my choices, ymmv. Good luck on your quest.

Re: What pedals for my rig?

I play a tele with a twin reverb. I play mostly funk/psychedelic/rock. I want recomendations for

a boost - Xotic RC Boost
overdrive - Fulltone OCD
fuzz - Fuzz Face
phaser - MXR Phase 90
delay - MXR Carbon Copy
wah - Dunlop 535Q

If you can't do it with those, you can't do it. I will mention, that you might want a more tweekable phaser. But maybe not.

OP This is pretty much a great and comprehensive list of the classic pedals that Aceman has put down for what you are trying to do -since you mentioned funk/clean tones -I recommend a compressor too -especially an optical one at the front of this chain.

Oh yeah! totally forgot I'm all onboard with the comp!

I'll recommend an MXR DynaComp, or optionally, to really get the funk out, maybe a DOD 280 or even an old Ross Greybox. This around even anymore???? Perhaps a Keeley 2 knob? Boss CS-2? For duh-funk it's an effect, not a "transparent" thing IMO...so old analog less-is-more here.

Re: What pedals for my rig?

Be careful with the Tchula. Josh Smith says lots of people gripe to him about it. It’s definitelt voiced for playing loud.

Re: What pedals for my rig?

The thing about the Tchula is, it's pretty much intended to be an always-on pedal, and then has a secondary boost circuit on top of that. My impression is that most use it to push their preamp fairly hard as their base tone all the time, and then hit the other button for extra saturation. There's only a level knob for one of the stages. That's why those with headroom to spare who try it as standalone boost get an unexpectedly huge volume increase when they kick it on. And there's no way to turn that down.

EDIT: Unless there's a trimpot inside. But extreme volume increase is, I think, the most frequent complaint with these. Still, those who use 'em as always-on love 'em dearly.

To me, if you don't need saturation in a boost pedal, the most flexible choice is an EQ. It will give you much more control over the boost voicing.

I like this a lot, but add a Fulldrive 2. Maybe sub the OCD for a Wampler Pinnacle. You can do just about any gig with that setup.

Re: What pedals for my rig?

I got a Lovepedal Fuzz50 last year, and it's reminded me how much I love Fuzzfaces. Tons of fun, and great cleanup via the volume knob.

If you get a fuzzface, be sure to put it first in line before everything else.
Running them after other pedals, especially buffered ones, can make them act & sound funny.
