Re: What pedals for my rig?
For funk wah, I would suggest a VOX Clyde McCoy. It has a brighter tone than my Crybabys, and is perfect for doing "Shaft" type rhythms.
Your choice for a phasor will probably come down to MXR vs. Boss...Phase 95 vs. the PH-3. Both are good versatile units.
You could do something like the Dunlop Echoplex preamp for a booster but it does slightly color your sound. I prefer something more pure, like my ancient DOD FX-10 Preamp, or the BBE Boosta Grande.
You don't mention chorus, but I will tell you I prefer DOD/Digitech over Boss. The Hardwire Chorus is very good, as are the Boss CE-2 Waza and the Dimension C.
Distortion and delays are the tricky part, and I might suggest as many as three, even four, units each...seriously! To start, a Soul Food is great for boosting as well as light overdrive tones. Next might be something to give you Marshall crunch. There are so many MIAB pedals, I wouldn't know where to start. Then, I'd want something to get my soaring Santana-esque Boogie leads, so I would look at the Mesa Flux-Drive rather than the Throttle Box. And you need a psychedelic fuzz box so go grab a E-H Satisfaction fuzz. It's bright and grindy and nails those late '60s tones. And it is CHEAP!
Most of the players I know are using multiple delays...a digital, like ubiquitous DD-3,5,6,7 and then an analog like the Carbon Copy or the DM-2 Waza. The new Carbon Copy Deluxe is getting rave reviews and paired with a DD-20 or DD-500 would be really impressive. Then add the EP clone of your choice. For just one pedal, or on a budget, hunt down a Line 6 Echo Park. Lots of power in that unit, but it weighs a lot for as small as it is.
These are my choices, ymmv. Good luck on your quest.
