What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

I switch depending on what I'm playing, Dunlop gel or Fender heavy if I have to strum or the EJ Jazz III or Dunlop Big Stubbies in 2.0 if I'm picking a lot of single notes.

It took me almost thirty years of playing to realize what a huge difference in tone the type of pick makes, (slow learner!) Lately I've been experimenting with all different brands and sizes in an effort to find some new favorites.

They just feel more... Efficient. All other picks feel like there's a lot of unnecessary material.

You can do it all with these.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

I was playing earlier today with a square bread tie, and I actually quite liked it.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

Lately it's been tortex the wedge picks .88 they are a shade bigger than regular tortex

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

I use the red tortex triangles. I used heavy picks for years but switched to light ones so i can dig into the string harder for a more shreddy sound and pick faster.

I started using triangles to break the habbit of using the roundy side of regular picks.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

Jazz IIIs. I use 9-42 strings so I don't need a heavy pick.
If I have 10-46 or 10-52 strings I'll normally use a 1.14 mm. Tortex or something like that.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

For the past few months it's been jazz iii's of all sort: the "standard" red one, eric johnson, ultex, and purple tortex. I just reach for whatever I think will work that day. The smaller shape has helped a lot with my control and I'm getting a lot less pick noise.

Winner comment :laugh2:

1mm Ultex oval triangles because they are rigid and I really like the attack.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

Dunlop Jazz III Ultex.

Why?.
One day, when I missed my usual pick, I just used the pick of a friend of mine and, my playing went really bad. I've feel like if I was stuck between strings.
That made me think: "hey, it seems that the pick I use affects my playing. What about to test several picks and see what happens?".

Then I went to an intensive test, with a bunch of different picks, with different shapes, different thickness and different material.

The shape, the grip, the thickness and the way as those picks help me in my dynamics is what I've considered after a lot of trying so, Dunlop Jazz III Ultex hands on for me.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

Dunlop Tortex Sharp 1.5 for me. :fing2:

Enjoy your selection, try mine. :biglaugh:

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

I keep all kinds of picks around and try different ones all the time.

i usually carry with me at all times a stainless steel pick (great for harsh attack crunchy armageddon) and an orange Dunlop Tortex .60 (durable workhorse). I use thinner picks on acoustic.

When I first discovered stainless steel picks, I called them the Pick of Destiny and handed them out to other guitarists like candy. I only know one other person who stuck with them, though.

What TLD said. Now if only the Max-Grips came in Ultex, I'd be in heaven.

...As long as I don't drop one. :lmao:

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

jazz iii, either the red nylon or the 1.14 tortex ones. they just let me play more precisely.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

I use the Fender 346 in either Heavy or Extra Heavy. I used to do a lot of pick slides and celluloid is the only thing that sounds right to me. It just gets burned up by the string. Needless to say, I've got LOADS of chewed up picks, but that chewed up edge gives some extra "chewiness" to the attack as well.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

Dunlop ultex sharp 2.0mm, because it's extremely rigid. I don't like jazz shape, they limit my picking dynamics.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

I use a fire extinguisher. It's a little unwieldly, but it's the only thing i've found that doesn't burst into flames within minutes from the intensity of my shredding.

^^ So you do your own roasted maple necks?

I used to use these, but have switched to black ones, they feel a bit more grippy, which I prefer. Love 'em.

I also use my own personal, organic picks :D.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

Dunlop Ultex .60

I like the response and texture they have. Perfect for picking and strumming.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

Since I started playing 40 years ago, I've always used Fender mediums. But recently I made a mistake and ordered some Fender Thicks instead and what a pleasant surprise they turned out to be. I get more attack and they also last longer as well. I'm sticking with these from now on.
