What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

Fingernails, because my 2 year old took all my guitar picks and hid them / ate them / threw them down the vents

Haha! I guess I'm not alone in this world! Yesterday I realized I need to go to the store to get more picks... for this same reasons.

^^ So you do your own roasted maple necks?

I used to use these, but have switched to black ones, they feel a bit more grippy, which I prefer. Love 'em.

I also use my own personal, organic picks :D.

I've tried to grow my nails just a little bit to play some flamenco the proper way, but I either eat them or they break at work...

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

The Ibanez Paul Gilbert sig picks are really nice surprisingly. Slightly smaller then a 351, 1mm in thickness with a Jazz III type pointy tip. I picked up a few at a music store and really dig them.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

I liked the tortex, until I found the Dava picks. They are really easy to grip, and flex more or less depending on how/where you hold them. Its like having 3 picks in your hand at once!

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

I'm not picky......

/someone had to say it

I use any standard pick on the heavier side of medium (.75 to 1mm generally) I always play with the round corners of the pick though, does anyone else do that? I have recently developed a liking for the green star picks, just like tortex but easier to grip.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

On my acoustic guitars I usually pick with my finger tips, but if I am practicing something that I would normally be playing with the band then I use a flat pick. When I do play acoustics with a pick I use the Dunlop .77(yellows) When I play electric guitar I generally use a .88 pick. I have had these printed with a logo on them. I used In-tune guitar picks. Pretty cool and if you buy a gross (144 picks), they are pretty cheap as well.

Hot! Why have I never heard of these?

Yup, I have 2 of the white pearloid ones. Really like them right now, wanna pick up some of the blues ones and black. They look great as well.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

It all depends on what i'm playing. If i'm playing anything with alot of fast single note stuff I normally pick up either an Ultex Jazz III or a 1.14mm Ultex Sharp although I lean towards the Ultex Sharp because it seems to fit better between my fingers while the Jazz III seems just a bit too small . Anything else is usually a .88mm Tortex.

I use Funk's fingers. These only come in one style. Each one is a different size and, fortunately, the shortest one is opposable. The only custom option is a hard, slightly scratchy extension piece that protrudes at one end.

Teckpick 'brass' picks.....Because the 'alloy' material produces such a unique guitar sound for me compared to non 'alloy' picks.....

Disadvantage - Often in stores salemen dont let me use them cuz they fear I will scratch their axes so they hand me non metal ones...

Advantage - I keep the ones they give me...:fingersx:

I have some of their aluminum ones--I like them for strumming, but not so much for single note playing.
Sometimes they sound tinny--but they have their uses, and I like them.

Ultex Jazz III's

Nice warm attack.. but notes stay well defined... just rounder & more musical to my ears.

I use this pick as well. I still have a few black Jazz IIIs around and a couple of the red ones too. But when I am out playing in front of people its Ultex Jazz III.
Doesn't slip if my hands get sweaty-

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

i think i will switch to ultex because they dont feel so sticky

They last forever, they stay sharp so it's easier to dig in without changing your grip angle, and at 1.5mm, they don't flex and they sound smooth. I used to use the old purple Tortex and at times, Clayton 1.0mm but these-I'm never going back.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

Jazz III - using green ones, not sure of the thickness. Learned to play on thin ones, not so concerned with thickness just that they don't really flex when you grip them.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

I've been using the 1.14 Dunlop picks since they first came out back in the Eighties I guess, in the classic Fender 351 shape. The Delrin sounds good but wears a little too fast. I like the Gators, but they are slightly smaller than the Tortex, which is probably my all-around fave. The Ultex picks actually sound a little softer to me than the Tortex, but I lose them long before I could ever wear one out.

I used to use different flat picks for acoustic than electric, but I trained myself to use the same on both. When I fingerpick on the guitar, I use a Dunlop or Golden Gate thumbpick, and Dunlop .020 or .0225 fingerpicks. The nickel-silver is fine, but lately I've been using a brass set--I don't hear that much difference.

I am also using some Clayton Ultrem 1.25mm picks, and these are slightly larger than the Tortex, with similar tone and durability to the Dunlop Ultex.

But gig time: 1.14 Purple Tortex or 1.14 Gators.

I use this pick because the tip of the pick is a tad sharper than some other flatpicks. And as a Metal guy I need that kind of tip for accuracy and speed. Also, I can feel this pick in my grip and hold onto it well during the most brutal and intricate playing bits.

You would think that a pick at this gauge would be stifling, but the quick release of the material (acetal) off the strings make it much less so.

I can't even play a pick of a lighter gauge for long without feeling how wimpy it feels between my fingers.

It grips well (without feeling strange), adds more tone, and is mega-durable; if pick scrapes are your thing then Clayton's acetal picks might be your thing.

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

Dunlop yellow .73, Because i have try'd soooo many eithers and i just seem to go back to the Dunlop's...

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

Dunlop Jazz III

When I first started, I used the fender celluliod things, but they slipped too much for me... Got into tortex 1.14, then 1.14 ultex, then back to the tortex, bought a jazz I and hated it (and after that I didn't touch jazz model picks for a while)... tried the gator grips, then I found my old jazz I and used it for a while... liked it soo much I went out and bought a bunch of jazz III's.... since then, I have been using various jazz III's... the normal red ones, the Kirk Hammett model (neon green with a small cutout), the black max grip, and recently I ordered the max grip carbon fibres, some ultex 1.38 jazz III's and some 2.0 Jazz III's.... I love them all for different things
