What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

I enjoy picks like that ultex jazz III because I usually use the rounded back for rhythm and the pointed tip for solo's

I enjoy really thin sharkfins for acoustic and rhythm playing but they're usually too Soft for any single note picking

I just heard a local shredder kick all sorts of ass and he was using orange Dunlop tortex picks. I'm still confused.

Hmmm, can't remember if I posted here or not, buuuut.....use either the v-pick screamer or an old 20's brass pick.

I use these almost exclusively now:

They're called Dava Grip Tips. They have a thin rubber overmolding around a substrate of nylon, delrin or "gel" which is probably a polycarbonate material. My favorite on electric is the delrin, on acoustic the gel. They have a great attack and release on the strings, they're just about the right thickness and rigidity, and they don't twist around in my grip.

V-pick snake or dimension. I like the unbuffed. I lost mine though so I use what ever is laying around mostly. Beer can tabs, cheap picks... Fingers... Coins. Even used a piece of my dog's beef bone once.

I'm trying to branch out at the minute, but I still haven't found anything to knock my 1mm nylons from their throne.

That's the pick I used exclusively until I found the Ultex Sharp .73. Paul Gilbert uses the same pick (Orange .60 Standard Tortex) so although it's a thin pick and shredders favor the thicker ones, the orange Tortex work and sound fantastic for that kind of playing... it just takes a lot more practice and precision from the player to play like that.

It's funny, because that same "flap" sound he talks about in the video, it's what keeps me using light picks for fast playing... and I didn't even knew anybody else would think that way about the pick. I tought I was sorta weird for thinking like that.

Those are some of my favorite picks too. I love the sound they get!

V pick for me ... mostly the "Tradition Lite" and the "Euro II" (with the holes in it to improve grip)

Re: What pick brand, style and size do you use and why?

I use Dunlop Ultex Jazz III's. I used to use purple Tortex, but when I found out John Petrucci used them, I figured I'd try the Jazz III's. They're just so much better for tremolo picking and fast playing in general. Not to mention the fact that they last forever.

Paul is so right and one of the reasons why I started using thinner picks and now I'm torn which is better, heavy or thinner (medium gauge). They sound awesome for chords and its funny regarding the pick slides cause he's right there as well.
