I think I read JB somewhere...was on a Mick Mars kick last week. Let me see if i can find that reference again for you.

BTW Rev my last name IS Hines, so if I ever get a custom job done by MJ, I'm gonna name it that!

Re: What pickups does Mick Mars of Motley Crue use?

Apparently he used Super Distortions at least through Shout at the Devil...but I've never seen ANY definitive proof of what he used after that. I'm going to guess Duncans of some sort but I have no ideas which one(s).

Re: What pickups does Mick Mars of Motley Crue use?

He used a Dimarzio Superdistortion in the early days with his Les Paul Custom. I've heard that later on, once he moved to modded Marshall/Soldano SLO amps, he used Duncan '59's in his Kramer guitars.

Re: What pickups does Mick Mars of Motley Crue use?

I'm also going to guess(not positive) that he used the SuperDistortion while recording Theater of Pain as well. His tone was again, really just chunky and fat on that album. It definitely changed on Girls, Girls, Girls....more articulate, however, much thinner. I'm *guessing* that's when he started using Duncans...or on the tour for Theater.

Re: What pickups does Mick Mars of Motley Crue use?

hurd the amp had a real KA-rang to it too..

PS--nope I cant tell from lookin if its a Jb or ?? --LOL

I just used that term cause the JB was coming up the most in the search engines for him lately...

Re: What pickups does Mick Mars of Motley Crue use?

I don't know if he still does, but he used to use '59's. It used to be listed as that on the page that tells what artists used.

Re: What pickups does Mick Mars of Motley Crue use?

A few years ago according to an interview on guitar.com he used a 16K special wound fender. I know on at least the first 2 he used a super dist. and later a '59.

Re: What pickups does Mick Mars of Motley Crue use?

Mick now uses some custom pickups. He's been using custom shop Fender strats with some custom wound pickups made

Re: What pickups does Mick Mars of Motley Crue use?

Mick is always very shady about his pickups for some reason.

i read this but never could find a pickup maker in Tennessee to confirm if it was true or just BS so people wouldn't copy him or something...

"Mick Mars: I have about eight guitars on tour. Most are Stratocasters which Fender modified. I put different pickups in them. I can't remember the guy's name who makes them, but he lives in Tennessee. Most pickups put out about seven to seven-and-a-half ohms, and mine are putting out 16. They have more windings. So that's one of my secrets. It just pushes the guitar amp and pushes the speakers harder."

That guy has to be a total idiot. First of all, a pickup doesn't "put out ohms", ohm is a term for defining electrical resistance. Second, if a pickup coil only measured 7,5 ohms, there must be something completely wrong. It's kiloohms, Mr. Mars, you idiot! Third, a hotter pickups won't push the speakers harder.
What a complete idiot.

(I guess this is why my father said that i should never listen to glam rock) :smack:

That's right....because all successful rock-stars should be well versed in EE concepts.

Right on.

DC Resistance (Ohms) is the output of the pickup, so he left the k out.

Higher output pickups drive the amp more, as you all should already know.

Mick Mars did and/or still does use Evans Eliminators, but Rod quit making them.
