What pickups does Mick Mars of Motley Crue use?

Re: What pickups does Mick Mars of Motley Crue use?

My friend saw them play not too long ago, He was using a paul, But im pretty sure he has a jb somewhere in the mix because it sounded alot like my friends les paul when he had a jb into his gt8 with a marshal cab& a 60 watt tube power amp. It may also be a super D because they sound pretty close together. I myself no offense would have to agree with again no offense, animae guy, he isn't that great of a player. I mean you can't over credit the guy for songs I was able to figure out when I was messing around in guitar class. Sorry if I sound like a jerk. Friends?:)

Re: What pickups does Mick Mars of Motley Crue use?

I'm surprised he can play at all. I seen him on VH-1, i think last year, before the Crue started their tour and he looked like he was near death. He has some type of bone disease or something.

Re: What pickups does Mick Mars of Motley Crue use?

I dig Shout at the devil and Threatre of pain's guitar tone.. if i'm not wrong, he used Dimarzio super distortion on a Gibson Les Paul on the early days..
now i think he uses JB or 59's on strats and sometimes a Les Paul

Re: What pickups does Mick Mars of Motley Crue use?

I saw them last year on the first tour date in Toronto. Mick Mars looked like Death himself. He still played well, but he could barely move. It was sad, really.

While he has a good ear for writing a catchy riff...

That's why! :) I get my fill of virtuosos on a daily basis. He's not one of them, but he provides well in other areas.

Can't say much for his live playing or tone, I never seen them live.

Labelling him a legend might be a stretch, as those terms are used for players that are 'up there'... saying 'I love Mick Mars' would be more appropriate :6:

I'm almost positive he used a Super Distortion with a Les Paul Custom into a Marshall in the early days.....it just has that big fat tone as such.

That's actually my favorite tone of his actually. So thick and chunky.

Mick Mars isn't a virtuoso and that's not really the point of his playing. It's the big fat riffs he has. He's got good feel, he's bluesy, not shreddy. I love how he put slide guitar into the metal stuff Motley did. If you go beyond the hits there's slide guitar all over Theater of Pain and Girls Girls Girls.

But then again, I always like bands that grooved with good riffs....that's what makes em interesting to me...not the virtuoso stuff.

I think he's very under-rated for his simplicity and riffs if nothing else.

He did. Thats all over TFFL.

He def can write a good hook. He's certainly a good guitar player in that repsect and would never knock him for not being a virtuoso.I would never knock Angus cos he wasn't sweep picking ya know?

Most of my faves are not virtuosos in the least. Perhaps Schenker in his prime was that caliber of player. The rest were all just good well rounded players. And I think thats where Mick suffers as a player. He's got a good ear for a riff and is solid in his timing and thats about it..for a one guitar band...thats not my cup of tea. In that case, I think thats where you NEED exceptional player. A Randy Rhoads. a EVH, etc...

Luckily for Mick, hes got an extremely solid rhythm section to keep the bottom from falling out when he's nto crunching along.

Re: What pickups does Mick Mars of Motley Crue use?

I would've much rather seen a lousy-sounding Crue on the BATM tour. I ended up getting to see Slade open for Ozzy. I've never seen so many rolls of toliet paper being thrown at a band before. :laugh2:

Re: What pickups does Mick Mars of Motley Crue use?

Too Fast For Love he used a plain ol BC Rich warlock . . . .
Sounds high and bitchy. . . .
Shout at the Devil had a killer sound!
He's not virtuoso, but how many rock gods really are that good?
Not hardly any new ones thats for sure.

Unless you`ve got some proof of him using a Warlock on TFFL I`m saying he used a Les Paul(most likely black)with a Super Distortion. He was always seen using a Paul until the SATD tour. Anything is possible but I`m going with a Paul.

No, he used to use a fat strat with a super d in the old days.

He used an LP with a Super Distorton on the first album and possibly some of Shout At the Devil as well.

Re: What pickups does Mick Mars of Motley Crue use?

I see that there, A Paul with white bridge pups in TWO video's but perhaps look at this one, its a white BC Rich Warlock set neck.
And Nikki has a mockingbird bass as well. . . .
Sorry before I said it was TFFL but it was SATD

Re: What pickups does Mick Mars of Motley Crue use?

Like in the first few albums but then I'm pretty sure he switch by the sound of it to a paul with a distortion or Jb, more than likely a JB:nervous:

Yep , that was their first vid. for the SATD album. I believe it first aired around Nov.-Dec. 1983 on MTV. On the SATD tour I`ve seen pics of him using the black Les Paul,BC Rich Warlock, black Flying V style guitar and a yellow/black zebra Explorer style guitar.

Nope , he started using Kramer Barettas(which is pretty much a fat Strat)for the Theatre Of Pain tour.

Re: What pickups does Mick Mars of Motley Crue use?

We may all be overlooking the fact that he 'records' with other guitars instead of the one he plays live with 'for show'.
