Re: What setup gives the most of you?

My sound comes from a Custom 5 bridge or vintage Alnico 5 strat neck, like Surfers, Chubtone 63's, or Fat 50's. IMO, the best humbucker tone comes from a Les Paul and the best strat neck tone comes from a Fender strat, so I end up using either of those, depending on what I'm playing. I've never believed that any HSS guitar could truly nail either of those tones as good as those 2 guitars, until the day I got my G&L Legacy Deluxe HSS. That guitar sounds as good as a Les Paul on the bridge, and as soon as I find the perfect single coils for it, I'll be happy. I think I need something like overwound Surfers, so I may use a Surfer Custom bridge in the neck on that guitar, just so I can get less volume jump between the C-5 trem and vintage strat neck.

For amps, I tend to favor the British EL-34 sound on clean, plexi, and high gain.
I don't have 'a sound' that I use all the time, but I'd say my clean is like Hendrix clean, the plexi tone is like early ZZ Top or Free, and the highgain is like Van Halen or Warren Haynes. I've always felt like any amp I had was a comprimise. I bought my dream amp, a Bogner Ecstasy, and it doesn't have any limitations, so it'll be my favorite amp for life.

As much as it pains me to admit, I could have voted either Strat or Tele on this. Dog a note on a Gibson through a screaming amp and you'll at least get SOMETHING. Dog a note on a Fender and the guitar will laugh at you. They're definitely instruments that force you to clean up your technique.

Then again, if you want to hear what I always love to hear with my playing, I need my '78 SG and a Fender Amp. Go figure.

exactly man. I hadn't touched a humbucker guitar until yesterday. When i picked up my buddy's SG and marshall practice amp i started playing so perfectly and fast i couldnt believe it. The buckers covered all of my sloppy notes and mistakes and made them sound like i was shredding. I went back on my strat and i had to pour a little more effort into it, but it's worth it. I get the best out of my playing and emotions on my strat, not a guitar that covers up my nuances.

yup, ive been playing my strat with thick strings for a while now, and when i picked up my friends jackson with 9s, man was it easy. I could hold a note forever and it sounded like i was playing incredibly fast.

Re: What setup gives the most of you?

My main tone is a Strat with alnico 2 pickups and Nickel-core strings into a pre-blackface style fender amp with 10s.

Re: What setup gives the most of you?

It's very interesting seeing all of these opinions, I wish I had more room for amps and guitars in my poll, I should have put superstrat on there.

Another question, are there any pedals that contribute to your "you-ness" that you must must have?

Re: What setup gives the most of you?

I personally haven't played enough gear in the long-term to be able to make a choice.
