Re: What setup gives the most of you?
My sound comes from a Custom 5 bridge or vintage Alnico 5 strat neck, like Surfers, Chubtone 63's, or Fat 50's. IMO, the best humbucker tone comes from a Les Paul and the best strat neck tone comes from a Fender strat, so I end up using either of those, depending on what I'm playing. I've never believed that any HSS guitar could truly nail either of those tones as good as those 2 guitars, until the day I got my G&L Legacy Deluxe HSS. That guitar sounds as good as a Les Paul on the bridge, and as soon as I find the perfect single coils for it, I'll be happy. I think I need something like overwound Surfers, so I may use a Surfer Custom bridge in the neck on that guitar, just so I can get less volume jump between the C-5 trem and vintage strat neck.
For amps, I tend to favor the British EL-34 sound on clean, plexi, and high gain.
I don't have 'a sound' that I use all the time, but I'd say my clean is like Hendrix clean, the plexi tone is like early ZZ Top or Free, and the highgain is like Van Halen or Warren Haynes. I've always felt like any amp I had was a comprimise. I bought my dream amp, a Bogner Ecstasy, and it doesn't have any limitations, so it'll be my favorite amp for life.
