What size strings????

Re: What size strings????

10-52 in Drop C, 9-46 tuned to standard.
For blues you want to do bends with authority and control, right?
It won't happen if you put huge strings and you're not used to them.

So when in doubt, go for the lighter gauge.

Re: What size strings????

I run 10-46 on all my guitars. I'm currently running between Ernie Ball Cobalts and M-Steels with Classic Rock n Roll pure nickel on my PRS HB 1

I find that bending with 10s and 11s is much more satisfying.

Re: What size strings????

Pure nickel 10-46 for my 70s SGs
Regular slinkys are good for the semihollows - after they've broken in good.

Re: What size strings????

9-42 on all my electrics. I don't have an LP, but Rachel has a 24.75" scale neck and I still like the light strings for her. I used to like heavier strings when I was younger, but have gotten wimpier as I've aged! Used to run 13s on my acoustic 25-30 years ago, but recently had to get rid of the 12s I had on because they hurt my fingers too much... acoustics are now 10s and my fingers are much happier. :D

Because you're used to them. Give me 11s tuned to E and make me try to bend them like I mean it. I won't be able.
In the end, the OP has to find what works for him.

Re: What size strings????

9-42s on everything in every tuning from standard down to C#, including the Les Paul I no longer have. Got plenty of Classic Rock and Blues tones from it, even with a 500T in the bridge.

But that's just my opinion.

You name your guitar......that's sweet lol. Thanks. I may use what 10s I have left and just start using 9s on all of them. I'm used to 9s anyway since my ibanez has to have 9s due to the floating trem.

Re: What size strings????

Nyxl 10s, they have a slightly slinkier feel and bend much better, its hard to describe but they feel incredible imo... worth every penny and will feel perfect on a 24.75 scale

Re: What size strings????

I use 10-46 on everything as well these days. Actually, 10-45 since I seem to be leaning toward the D'adarrio pure nickel XL's which has a .045 low E.

+1. 9-42 for everything, all of my guitars are Gibson designs with 24.75" scale lengths. I play blues and classic rock & bend a lot.

Re: What size strings????

I use 10-46 pure nickel wrap on my LP-type guitars, in either standard or E-flat tuning. (On 25-1/2" scale guitars I use 9-42, though my Slayer guitar in E-flat gets Boomers in 10-46.)

I used to run 9-46 Cobalts on my LP, then one day when changing strings I accidently opened a set of 10-52s that I normally used on a super strat in drop-c (with the EB Cobalts the packages look really similar) so I decided to throw them on the LP anyways and after a quick setup I discovered that I like the tone of them on the LP in drop D better than the lighter strings

Re: What size strings????

Depends on your physiology - literally how strong your fretting hand/arm is. Classic rock and blues requires bending (LOTS of bending) so your hand has to be able to do that with accuracy (which includes knowing when to overbend). For all my electric guitars, I have 11-49 D'Addario or Ernie Ball as standard - and I have for nearly 30 years, so I'm used to them. Put me on a guitar with 9s or even 10s and I have to work hard to calm myself down - even fretting and keeping tune is tough because of finger pressure issues - I can do it, just have to work at it. I would try an extended period at each gauge (3 months or more) to see how you settle with each gauge.

I've got some nerve damage affecting my fretting hand and would probably be doing myself a big favor with something like Dunlop Rev. Willys 7-38's. But I'm a stubborn bastard so da-mn-it, I'm sticking with 10's until I get fed up enough that I fling a 9lb chunk of mahogany through the drywall. Maybe then I'll do the wise thing and drop down a string gauge, or 2, or 3 ...

Re: What size strings????

I just saw Billy on 'Live at Darryl's House'. He said he uses 7's, and that BB King used 8's for decades.

I thought he used 7's but I googled it to make sure I wasn't making it up and could only find the 8's. lol

Both 7s and 8s are crazy light/thin IMO

Re: What size strings????

Normally eb 9/42. I am trying some pure nickels on my shinobi build and the very first thing that pissed me off is that the strings all come wrapped together. They need individual packets like ernie ball.
