what tubes for peavey valve king?

the 6l6's arent cutting it for me. never was a big fan of them anyway. i havent tried many tubes. so i was wondering what people here would suggest. i thought about el34's. i always liked them in marshalls. but i started looking at kt66's. how would these sound in it?

Check me if I'm wrong here, but I am pretty sure that 6L6 tubes are the only ones that will work in the valveking amps. The other tubes you mentioned are not interchangable. You might be able to have it modified to take other tubes, but you would pay someone enought to buy a Marshall to modify it. Try retubing with JJ-tubes in preamp (12ax7) and power stage (6L6). It worked wonders for mine.

That amp only has the ability to use 6L6's in it's present state. The cost to mod it would not be worth it. When I had one, I improved the overall tone considerably by using TAD 6L6STR's(Warm, huge bottom end, smooth) and running various NOS 12at7's in all of the preamps positions. The 12at7's cut the buzziness that the 12ax7's added when pushing the gain, yet the gain was still substantial. The only other thing that I feel is a must change on this amp was the speaker. I ran a Vintage 30 and it was head and shoulders above the stock peavey one.

thanks for the info. i'm glad i asked before i wasted the money. i run mine through a 2x12 cab so i really dont have to wory about the speaker.

Will the TAD 6L6WGC-STR tubes fit or do I need the TAD 6L6GC-STR tubes?
What is the difference between the normal ones and 'rca-style'?

The difference in design is that the WGC is shorter and a little wider, however I don't know if the spacing on the VK is enough or not. Tonally, I believe that the W has a little less headroom than the longbottled GC. ScottF has a set of the WGC's and may be able to give you the measurement to check. The GC's had ample room between the two tubes.

Depends on what's in there and what you want then to do. Good thing is that new build preamp tubes are cheap so try different ones as there are only 3. Mine came with EH's that sounded blah. If you want to stay with 12ax7's: JJ's are always a sure bet, Golden Dragon's are my favorite for V1, Tung Sol sound beautiful, but are a bit more expensive.

Thanks for the info. Tung-Sols are actually not much more money here in the UK.
What are the best / good sounding 6L6 power tubes that are better than the TADs?
