Ok Guys im curious what type of guitar player are you? Are you what we would consider a rhythm guitar player or a lead guitar player?

Also give your reason why.

Me i am more of a rhythm player for many reasons, mainly because i liek music that deals with more chord progressions rather than guitar solos. Also i really lliek playing chords and right now im leanring as much as i can in terms of chords and how to form them, inversions, open tuning chords etc. If i ever play lead, its really bad, i can only do minor solos or riffs no face melting solos for me.

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

I've actually played cowbell in a band. Seriously. I just stood there with a cowbell and a stick and I played quarter notes.

I did it with attitude though.

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

I voted 'a bit of both'.

I personally don't like the term 'lead guitar' - to me that implies someone like Santana or Clapton who plays lots of bluesy fills and solos. I do play solos, but not in every song and even then for 80% of the song it's mainly rhythm but more so 'textures'. If you already have a rhythm guitarist (like we do) then there's no point strumming chords as well so I go for melodic ideas like broken chords, arpeggios etc.

So if someone asks me if I play lead guitar, I usually reply yes between gritted teeth...

So did I. I play both rhythm and lead. Our accordion player occasionally plays an acoustic for rhythm, but I play rhythm on 80% of songs. I also take a solo or play some fills in a majority of songs.

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

Well, I voted both because I do fill both rolls, often within a single song. But really, I THINK of myself more as a rythym guitarist because the only reason I ever picked up a guitar in the first place was to write pop songs and I wanted an instrument more portable than a piano with which to play chords underneath said songs.

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

i'm in fact more lead than rhythm but most of the time i do both during a song so there are no clear borderlines

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

I voted both, especially since in the present band im in im the only guitarist. i practise both but havent gone headlong deep into soloing so ill be shredding my fingers off. Im not so interested in being a technical wonder, i just wanna rock plain n simple. Cant do that without rhythm :)

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

there wasn't a section for musical butcher...so i voted for rhythm...as long as it's slow and easy...lol! :smack: :laugh2: :smack:

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

I guess I lean to rhythm in the band setting more often tham lead playing. I can play lead, but the other guitarist is a better lead player, IMO. I do feel, however, that my rhythm playing is tigher and that I'm a better riff writer.

And of course, there's no bias in my opinion.

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

I am more af a rythm player than a lead player as of right now.

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

I love soloing but I am the only guitar player in my band so i do mostly rythm!!

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

I'm both. I love adding little rythym parts to beef up the song. Like Johnny Winter does behind Rick D on the live album. Using mini-chords to accent the solo

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

I do whatever is appropriate to the tune. I'm also from the old "Plug In and Play School" which IMO, tends to keep everything in a much better perspective.

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

Me too, I'm a little bit of both. I'm self-taught on the guitar so I started learning chords on my own and progressing from there. Most of my strength is in rhythm playing and I learned a few easy solo's here and there. I think my rythm playing is pretty good and am looking to develop my solo'ing skills...

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

I'm both I guess. If there were two guitarists in my band, it would be more like Dave and Adrian in Iron Maiden rather than set rhythm and lead guitarists. I like to consider myself like Iommi or Page where I play rhythm and lead.

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

Maybe "a bit of both", but my main thing is rhythm. I only started playing lead seriously this past summer, but even then, I'm still a rhythm player.

I'd like to develop into a guy like The Edge, who can really do both, but in a way you don't normally think of. Like, the solo in "Sunday Bloody Sunday" is just a continuation of the rhythm. Also, songs like "In God's Country" where the lead part is the rhythm. Something else that's cool is in "like a song" where he repeats the lead motif (which is pretty simple) between verses, but adds little embellishments here and there to make it seem fresh.

Jack White's playing in "Offend in Every Way" also exemplifies this kind of style I'm talking about, only in a more bluesy variation.

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

I can solo here or there, but take that with a grain of salt because my scales are heavily based on Dorian, minor pentatonic type stuff.

I consider myself a rhythm guitar player much more than lead, but I can do lead well enough to add to a song.

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

I can do both.
I think playing good rhythm is more important than soloing, though. But i'll step out for a solo when it's called for.

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

When I first started there wasn't anything I wanted to do better than soloing, I was alway listening to solos not even paying attention to the rest of the song (this has changed now), and now I still love soloing

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

ive always loved rhythm guitar and i think im better at it, but every one else thinks im a fine soloist. i think having both makes me a more well rounded player and more able to jump into an unfamiliar situation
