What would be a good combination with a plexi?

I already have a plexi, love the sound of it. It has good gain tones and good cleans when the volume is rolled down.

I was thinking in adding a 2203 as a step up on gain or add a 2204 voodoo moded (use it for lead playing). My concern is that my plexi is 100w and the 2204 is 50w so I don't know if a 50W will sound thin compare to the plexi. I know it will have more gain than my plexi...

Or

Get a Fender Deluxe reverb, (for rhythm), which have good cleans but not as heavy as a plexi or a JCM 800.

I have clean boosts for the Plexi which work great with it, just looking for opinions.....

The plexi with a DLX reverb sound like a cool idea but don't know if it will be a good way to go. I do like high gain, even though I don't play any metal....Mostly classic, progressive, hard rock....

Thanks for the help

Skip the JCM 800 and go for a Fender, or you'll wind up in a tonal rut. With a nice pedal, you should be able to do anything with that plexi. I have a JCM 800, and I'd much rather have a plexi. BTW, keep in mind that a stock JCM 800 isn't going to blow you away in the gain department.

Yup that is a true fact. I see a lot of people mod. their JCM 800s for more gain......Thanks for the input. I was more concern about having more of the same. Some prefer (like me) the plexi others the JCM 800. I read a couple of threads were people go from the 800 to the plexi so I think is not much of a gain issue......Anyway a SD-1 by keeley or a RAT can change things on the plexi for gain issues that is......Although it migh color the tone a bit....

When I found my '70 50 watt Marshall I sold both of my JCM 800's. I'd vote for a nice Fender Deluxe Reverb and put a Celestion G12H30 speaker in it. I modded the circuit of mine for a little hotter, more easily overdriven tone, but nothing outrageous. Lew

Thanks for you opinion Lew. I was thinking about the deluxe or a super reverb...About the mos seems like a good idea add a little gain so it breaks up a bit early than the stock.....

Pureolddude,

My "drive" amp is my trusty Laney, and my "clean" amp is a Deluxe Reverb, which I'm currently building... end soon! I think I'll like this combo :D and I suggest you should try that. Anyway with the right pedal thru your Plexi you can achieve 800 tones quite easily! But you'll never reach THE "fender clean" with a marshall....

The Deluxe is a great Amp, but it is only 22 watts. PLaying that with a 100 watt Plexi is going to be difficult to match volumes. The Deluxe is one of my favorite Amps but once the volume gets over 6 they tend to get muddy. I would give some thought to the Super Reverb. At 40 watts it will give you more headroom. IF you want the Fender to do amazing cleans at high volume consider the Twin Reverb. All of this will depend to a degree what type of sound you are after. I use a 900 A/B'b with a Super Reverb, and I love the versitility. Drawback is it is a lot of stuff to move espicially at 3:00 in the morning!!

Yeah... but put in some nice 6L6 (instead of 6V6) for more power, headroom, tightness and bass.... also a nice WeberVST 12F150 is the key!

I was concern about that the plexi being 100w against 25w. I was looing at some Super reverbs as well as the pro reverb. Any thoughts on the pro reverb?

Re: What would be a good combination with a plexi?

get a Fender Showman head......you can find them cheap $350-$500 ive seen em go for around here......... you will have great fender cleans and it will be insanely loud (its essentially fender twin in a head form)......i think that would be best for keeping up volume wise

THe Pro is essentially the same Amp as a Super Reverb. The difference is the Super has 4 10" speakers, and the Pro has 2 12" speakers. I have a SF Super from 1969. Out of all the gear I have owned it has been the best Amp. I A/b my Super with a 50W 900 Combo. This gives me a lot of versatility. With a TS9 in the Fender and a few other units I can do almost anything I want. I am also looking at a BF Deluxe. In most club arrangements the Deluxe is probably the best choice. Due to its low out it breaks up very well at about 3, but in most situations 3 to 5 is as loud as you will be able to play anyway.

Really I was under the impression that the pro and the Super were different
