I love the hot rod deville's clean sounds and I like the dirty/clean sound it has now that I tooled around with my vooodoo lab and my strat..

I have a question though.. If I were to change tubes..either preamp or power

which tubes would still retain that great fender clean but also smoothen out the fender gain.

I like the sound of a lightly distorted hiwatt 50watt and the soldano's

I know hot rods wont get as crunchy but in terms of that great smoothness how would I go about doing it.

any advice?? Also what makes more of a difference changing the preamp or power tubes?

go head and suggest some great tubes to try out... Im visiting the amp tech and i might just try some things out.

thanks

Some suggest changing the V2 tube to a lower gain 12AT7 to smooth it out.
Myself? The 1st day I got my HRD i took the channel selector and threw
it in a Draw and haven't saw it since. It's now a 1 channel amp. I get my
O.D/Dist. from stomp boxes. Or you could try trace at Voodoo amps. He
has some mods to goose the O.D. channel.

Put a resistance in the effects loop. I did that with my HRD and that allowed me to crank up the volume and get the tubes cooking a lot more.
I used a volume pedal, and then used a 100k pot. I think 10k works well also.

CHange out the stock speaker and get something you like. I'm partial to V30's myself, but there are lots of good speakers out there. As far as power tubes go, I really, really like the 6L6's EH is putting out right now.
